Stuck slide - Montana Owners Club

I noticed when doing a walk around today that one of my main living room slides wasn't fully closed. After trying to open all the slides that slide was stuck on one side and opening on the other side. There was also a 6 by 6 piece of rubber on the carpet in the living room. I managed to close it and leave. Does anyone know what is going on? The other three slides are fine. Thanks for any advice.

Sounds like something jammed under the slide, and that piece of rubber is a factor.

Also check the shear pin on the end of the rod that drives the side opposite the driving gears on the other side of the slide. This can cause one side and not the other going out or coming in. I had this happen on the SOB owned before the Monty. The rubber piece maybe something else that is causing the problem. Good luck!

Might not be the same issue. We had the rubber/vinyl material you see under slides when retracted "stick" to carpeting do to excessive heat. It left large black marks, and pieces of rubber like material on carpet. It caused the slide hydraulics to "push the entire wall of closet side" and caused major damage to outside wall and metal flashing. It's was very, very expensive warranty item. It was determined or theorized that the "underlayment material" melted and fused to the carpet. For the first "5 minutes" keystone tried to blame me...they came to realization it was their problem. Nearly 10k to fix properly.

The shear pins were all ok any other ideas?

If the slide still tries to extend or retract skewed ... extend it out about 1/4 of the way. Remove the shear bolt and using a crescent wrench, turn the free side one quarter turn at a time to get it as close to straight as possible. Replace the shear bolt (see photo for conformation of the shear bolt location). Although I've never seen one do this ... it might be possible that the gear on the balance shaft jumped the rack a tooth. Once it is all working normally again ... start looking for missing weather seal and deal with that issue. Note on the photo that the large nuts on the end of the cylinder are correctly not tightened together ... DO NOT decide to tighten the nuts together on the pusher bracket as the cylinder has more stroke that your slide has physical travel. You will break something really expensive!

I called keystone today and they told me I have a burned out slide motor. He said it's quite common. Does anyone know approx how much that will cost to fix?

There is no "slide motor" on mine. They are all hydraulic ram driven by a single hydraulic pump.
A slide motor would be for an electrically driven slide. Is yours electric?

A 2008 Montana has all hydraulic driven slides. The only motor is the pump and that obviously is not burnt out. If the slide is stuck out. call a "GOOD" mobile RV repair guy. He should be able to diagnose your problem.

I located the hydraulic reservoir and it is less than half full. There are no hi low lines on the tank how full should it be? Could a low tank be the issue?

It should be 1/2 -1" below the top with all slides in. Hydraulic jacks too in one has them.

I had to get serious about the slide issue today because winter is approaching . I pulled the Monty out today with the slides open thinking it wasn't level because of settling, that didn't work so I asked my 14 year old cabin neighbor to help me push the slide in and that didn't work so I asked him to look while I pushed the in button and he said there was a bolt missing and the shaft was turning! We put a bolt in and yea the slide went in. I either don't know what the shear pin is or it was a simple bolt that came loose over time either way it made my day to finally figure it out! We are going to Lanesboro next weekend with Ozzie and his wife to check out the fall leaves.#128522; I am really glad we didn't have to cancel because of the slide failure!

On page 1 of your thread ... the 8th reply down was mine with a photo of what the shear pin looks like and where it's located. It's the small bolt with the nut side pointing up on the balance shaft just under the cylinder ram.

I see now but when I looked at it earlier I thought it was the cotter pin looking things and mine were fine. Is there a special type of bolt that I should replace it with? Softer steel or hard?
