While I don't believe a special license should be required, I do feel that anyone pulling a trailer of any size needs to be reasonable proficient at backing it. You never know when you might find yourself in a position that requires you to back around a corner to get out of a jam. If anyone is not comfortable with their backing than they could find an empty parking lot with lines and practice putting the trailer between them from different angles. Backing is not hard, it's just takes a little practice.

Not exactly. This has been beat to death here previously. Read the "Recreational Vehicles and Trailers Handbook" in its entirety and on Page 12 you will find the "oh by the way" requirement to add a Restriction 41 to your Class C license if:
Additionally, as almost all the Montanas (not HC) are over 15K you will need a Non-Commercial Class A license in CA. Same written test as the Restriction 41 endorsement plus a driving test and a self completed physical form.
P.S. did you all realize this an year and half old posting?

The thread may be a year and a half old but it is "new" for the newbies here. BTW almost half of the HCs over 15K. Okay may 1.5 years ago they were lighter. I am still trying to see what my driving exam here in Texas will consist of.

Hi
If you think the alley test is hard in a Montana try using a 53 ft trailer.
I hold a class A CDL.

As a Retired ( 42 years behind the wheel ) truck driver with over 6,000,000 miles I'm all for the non commercial driving test in all states but I think it should include all RV's trust me when I say that I've seen some real nightmare recreational driving stunts in my years on the road.

Driving tests don't seem to keep knuckleheads driving cars off the road. Enforcement when someone is not in control and breaking the rules may be a better option.

So the set up as described puts a 5er RV driver at a disadvantage from a regular transport trailer as the wheels on a trans trailer are situated at the rear of the trailer with little to no overhang. Surely the DMV takes this into consideration for the testing ?
As someone who has spent many years backing both up into tight spots I can tell you that a trans trailer will always be the easier unit due in part to the pivot point of the rear wheels being at the rear of the trailer while many large 5er's have a significant overhang behind and the axles are more mid point mounted.
After a couple times it is usually a non issue except in a circumstance as described above.... Sounds a little to prescriptive however I am all in favour of the requirements to demonstrate you can safely drive it in traffic, know safe following stopping distances, be able to maneuver in tight spots and can back it up safely and successfully.....
Far too many on the road that can't.......

I must have to agree with an RV / trailer ' cabover , boat etc endorsement... One of the first things I see is those pulling RVs at 70 and faster. Speed is the number one thing I see. However, one must also be knowledgeable about weight, Tires, hitches, chains, etc.. I see 3/4 ton trucks pulling triple axle trailers.. WRONG.. If you don't have the Truck you cant buy THAT RV.. Period... Or, you need to downsize your RV.. I see 1/2 ton trucks pulling large trailers, or Toyotas or whatever.. Right tool for the job... Now i hear some say, "yea, it will pull it, but will it stop it".. WRONG.. THE trailer brakes stop the trailer not the truck.. Anyway.. Bought one ton dually Cummins Aisin, 4:10s auto level... now I don't have to worry .....

dub, I agree with your statement re the difference between a fiver and a commercial trailer. Placement of the wheels is what is the problem and allowances should be made.
That said I am in big favor of some sort of additional training or licensing for anyone pulling a large trailer. Or for that matter a moter home. I have seen people pulling a fiver in the car pool lane in CA??? For thouse who don't know in CA when pulling a trailer of ANY size you are limited to 55 MPH and staying in the right two lanes. From what I have been able to see that is the best kept secret in the state.

Sounds like an enforcement issue, if they did I would imagine the behaviours would soon change and they would all fall in line in the two lanes at 55-60mph after some fines were posted.
In my experience the posted speed is a guide on major freeways that means very little as long as traffic is flowing smoothly. Posted limits at 60mph usually means driving 70mph with police not even glancing at the vehicles as long as they are operating safely.
Left lane on major freeways pretty much everywhere are not supposed to be taken by commercial trucks but for anyone out there driving alot you will notice that despite the rules many licensed drivers seem to migrate into the lane regularly....... Enforcement is lax unless they are impeding traffic flow in most cases....

Va don’t have any special licenses for RVs of any kind. Everybody here seams to get along just fine. I agree with one of our state senators, now deceased, “every time we make a law we take away somebody’s rights”.
