You need to crank up the furnace to keep the pipes from freezing

I have a related question... We are set up in a campground in Fl.. temps getting in the 40's overnight.. When I have the furnace on the heat pump/ac unit also runs, continuously blowing/circulating air, whether the furnace is running or not... Is this normal???

The answer to the fan question is yes and no. It's a common problem caused by the fan being set on something other than auto when you are using the furnace. Always set the fan for auto when you are using the furnace. As for the heat pump in general, ours has worked into the middle 30's but that's pushing it. There has to be heat in the outside air for it to capture it and pump it. The fireplace will work no matter what, but as stated above, you need the furnace to keep the pipes from freezing once it gets real cold.

System works great now with fan set to AUTO!!!
We are in Punta Gorda, Fl and using more propane for heat than ever before... it was 42 this AM....we came to southern FL for warmth....Oh Well... we could be "up north" and really freezing and shoveling!!!!!
Just not getting any sympathy from our kids in upstate NY.....

One other point, if using the heat pump and it can't meet the temperature set point it will switch to furnace automatically. That's how ours works anyway. Not sure they all will. I had read it in one of the manuals but then experienced it first hand back in November.
What I haven't figured out yet is if it will switch back to the heat pump once things warm up a little. I doubt it, but you never know.

Heating your unit
I've read many replies on the heat issue. We just camped thru -10 -35f air/wind chill and believe it or not, but we only used (1) 30# tank in 7 days Heat set at 65, fireplace on, and (1) 1500 watt ceramic in the living space and (1) 750 watt ceramic in the underbelly.. the secret for us was simple Sealing around perimeter to keep wind from howling thru ( not sealed tight tho) , sealing the gaps (weatherstripping) on the windows and door, and sealing around the (4) slides on the inside

We're near Punta Gorda this week and it was 64 this morning. Will run the a/c today. Was near the villages last week during the polar stuff and the heat pump did the job along with the fireplace. Furnace did run a few times during the night. S&B is in upstate NY and not missing that weather.
