Grand Canyon
DW and I are in the early stages of planning a trip to the south rim of the Grand Canyon in June or September. Any suggestions as where to camp while there. We have a 2955-RL. A good 60-75% of our camping is done with out any hook-ups. That makes us fairly wide open for places to stay.

Hi Keith,
We stayed at The Canyon Motel & RV Park in Williams. The highway that goes to the south rim starts right at Williams and takes about an hour to get there.
The people were very nice and park was good.

Two years ago we spent 10 days at the RV park inside the park, on the south rim. We got to see lots of wildlife and it was easy to see sun sets and rises with a short walk. We had full hookups.
We would do it again.

I was there this last August (not camping) where we took a helecoptor tour of the Canyon. The pilot pointed out the trails around the Canyon was free to boondock for up to 2 weeks where I did see a few campers within the trees. I don't know anymore than that.

We stayed at the Grand Canyon Railway RV Park in Williams. Took the train into the canyon fron there, we really enjoyed the ride.

We have never camped there, but have visited during the summer months (including June) and it was HOT! Most members commenting on this forum about AC issues have often mentioned the difficulty of cooling in really hot places...the the Grand Canyon. You might want to do some research on temps during the times you want to visit...just a thought from someone who would like to make a camping trip to the Grand Canyon, but not during the summer!

We were there with our pop up some 20 years ago, and stayed at the KOA south of the park. It was July, but because the altitude at the rim is so high we were fine...with NO AC!! Now, a few steps down Bright Angel Trail into the canyon, it got quite hot.

There are a couple of parks inside the park. Both are located just a very short distance from the rim. There is a Federal park with no hookups and there is a commercial park with hookups. We stayed in the commercial park. It is nothing special it is just a place to park with hookups. If you don't need hookups then I think I'd stay in the Fed park. But I must admit that I have not even driven through it so can't tell you a thing about it.
We'd stay at the commercial park again if we were going to stay there again. The nice thing is that you are in the center of everything. Even the bus shuttle service comes right to the park.
You will need to get reservations for either park early or you may not get in.
It is a long way to any of the parks outside of the park. I can't remember if there is an RV park at the entrance coming from Williams.... I don't think there is but please correct me if I'm wrong.

We were just there this last September and stayed in Williams... Wish we had stayed at the park because it was about a 65 mile drive to the rim so only spent one day there.. The commercial one inside the park was nice and if my memory hasn't failed me, I think there was a park just before the entrance where the I-Max theater is. Course that memory has been failing quite a bit lately.

We were there in March and there is a campground across the street from the I-Max theater... We stayed in Williams the the Railroad park.. real nice...

We stayed at the Good Sampark out of williams and took Marvelous Marv's guided tour much better then the train ride and worth the price. ost informative and veery interesting

We went to the Grand Canyon last May and stayed at the campground in the park. I requested a pull thru site with full hook-ups and one that would also be wide enough for 4 slides. The site that we had was great and being in the park is the way to go. If your tired you can go back for a rest and then go back out later that day. It was wonderful being able to see the canyon at different times of the day. The deer always came to the sites too.
Took the shuttle bus all of the time and really didn't use the truck.
Have a great trip and enjoy all of the beauty of the canyon.

Another vote for staying at the full hookup campground in the park. Free shuttle buses stop right at the campground. We were there for a week just two months ago. One afternoon there were 5 deer just 20' from our door.

We stayed in Williams, AZ at one of the RV parks and took the Marvelous Marv tour to the canyon. Worth every penny.
