Ouch! We skinned the roof off!

Wow! we finally did it. Pulled into an RV Park in Reno and turned a little close to that tree limb. It scraped the side of the roof just right to skin the rubber roof so there are numerous cuts in it, like a serious skin scrape. I tried to patch as much as possible with a little rubber roof material but now I need to face the music of getting it repaired. Has anyone had their roof repaired? Any details or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks John

Yes, our first trip out we did almost the same thing. Took a corner just a little to tight and a limb reached out and tore the roof. Had our dealer's service area repair it. After that we also bought a patch repair kit so we have it for emergency's. Repair is holding great and haven't had to use repair kit!

A complete roof is an expensive job. Upwards of $4000+. Check your insurance coverage. If it is not too bad there is some patch tape and or enternabond. Sorry!

I managed to do the same thing last year and had about 6 feet of damage to the roof. Luckily, I had recently purchased a roll of Eternabond and made the repair using it. As a result, I can highly recommend the product - it is virtually permanent and leaves your roof almost as good as new.

kmh3212 is correct, a roof replacement is very expensive (I'm in the middle of one right now, but that's another story) and perhaps unnecessary in your case.

We had an encounter with a tree in our other rig about 5 years ago - had to have the whole roof replaced to the tune of right around $4000., but fortunately our deductible was only $100. so we got off easy - best of luck with yours!!!

My daughter and Son in Law just had the roof replaced on their Cougar after the wind blew a limb on their roof and caused 4 or 5 small tears. Cost is/was $125.00 per foot.

Consider purchasing Eternabond tape and repairing it yourself. You can buy it at CW (they also have patches) or go to www.bestmaterials.com and get it for about 2/3 the CW price. We've used it for patching our scrapes and other roof bruises and it works fine. Just be sure you clean the area where you're going to patch. Clean it with rubbing alcohol. Be sure you know exactly where you want to lay the tape because once you put it down, it "ain't" going to come up!

Thanks everyone, I did go to CW and found Kool Seal patching tape as well as Elastometric Kool Seal paint a paintable solution that goes on top of a primer which I will use to blend the color variation once the patch is on. These were the only products for rubber roofs that CW had for sale. I could not find any Eternabond. I hope what I got is going to work.

It would be advantageous for you to pick up a roll of Eternabond 4" X 50' tape from www.bestmaterials.com I carry a full roll with me all the time and you'd be surprised how many times I've been able to help other travelers who have done what we seem to be prone to do: get to close to a tree limb.

I had the roof and bullnose cap ripped when I pulled away from the curb to go to the Tucson Rally. The neighbors tree in the parkway was not trimmed by the city that does not allow anyone to trim their trees. The cost was $10,000 which was covered by insurance who will subrogate to the city.

There was a tree in our park in Florida that kept trying to get me for a couple of years. Last year it finally did. We bought the eternabond and have had no problem since. Like Orv, I carry a roll of it with me. Wouldn't be without it.

Did the same thing on your first trip where there were trees. Poked small scabs on the side where the roof curves. Brand new and I used the standard Dicor INSIDE and OUTSIDE the small snags. Still no leaks.

DH must have read this thread because yesterday he trimmed the tree that we must pass/park under when we bring the Monty home.

We, too, carry a roof repair kit--just in case.
