Of courses synthetic is excellent oil, but as evidenced by the vast majority of tractor trailer operators, standard diesel oil is fine. Many run a million miles on it, much longer than the majority of RVers will go. As noted above, frequency of change is more important than type oil. If it makes you feel better to use synthetic, knock your self out...your truck do as you please.

Rotella T6 Synthetic 5W-40
Rotella T6 Synthetic 5W-40 can't be beat; especially during the winter.

I have a 2009 F350 dually and I run 5W40 AMSOIL. Recommended by the Ford mechanic at a dealership. I have ben using AMSOIL products since I got my truck.

New issue popped up last year - Newest Diesel oil is CK-4. Per Ford we are not to use CK-4 because there is insufficient lubrication properties (certain parts of the Engine were wearing out to quickly when using CK-4 oil.) See http://fordauthority.com/2017/03/for...stroke-diesel/ for some explanation.
There is also a list out there that shows the oils that currently meet Fords new specification. Unfortunately I can't find a link to it right now.

Ran Amsoil Signature Series 15w 40 in my 2011 and now running in my 2017. Not a problem ever came back on the lab reports. Been going by the lab for oil change intervals which has never exceeded ford recommendation. Ford also states in the manual for bioblend fuel to run either 5w 40 or 15w 40 for my MY17.

Go with what your owners manual and dealer say. Should be 10w30 synthetic blend. I just take mine to my dealer and say “oil change please”. They do what is required and I get it for free 3 times a year.

I agree but just put out the warning that, except for a few oil vendors - SHell T-6 not being one of them, Ford has come out saying to keep using CJ-4, stay away from CK-4 certified oil. The newer oil is not approved for the 6.7 liter engine except for the few. More are being approved as time goes on from what I've read.
No personal history here, nor have I read of any one actually having problems, just what I've read from Ford and other sources.

Not sure if Ford has changed the specification for oil in the 6.7 diesel. I use Mobil 1 5W-40 Turbo diesel Truck oil in my 2013 F-350 SC LB SRW and I tow 14,100 lbs. Trouble free for 85K miles. I am religious about changing oil & filter at 5K miles. That may be overkill but I see it as cheap insurance. I don't ever want to see the oil life reminder on my truck light up.

Ok here is what Ford says
Ck4 type formulations have shown inadequate wear protection compared to CJ-4 formulations developed and licensed before 2016. Ford now recommends using oils that meet our OEM specification, Ford Material Engineering Specification WSS-M2C171-F1.”
Please note the “WWS-M2C171-F1” designation this is what Ford says to use in your engine. They are the guys that have spent millions testing oil and billions developing the engines. Just because it worked on older engines does not mean that with today’s pollution controls and higher output engines it is advisable today.

AMSOIL 15W40 User
I run a 2011 F-350 DRW 6.7 pulling a 2014 3850FL. Bought the truck with 33,000 miles on it and immediately changed oil to AMSOIL 15W40. I run oil analysis at each oil change to track metal wear and other issues. Attached is a copy of the last oil analysis and history, I am happy with the performance.

I am also a Shell Rotella T6 user. Synthetic is the only way to go protect your engine. Many diesel owners are Rotella users.

Rotella T-6 synthetic is all I use in my 6.7. I have the dealer change at 6k intervals, at 18k miles already and the engine does not use a drop between changes.

On the subject of oil viscosity. (weight) I have worked for a Caterpillar dealership for 42 years and have been performing failure analysis on engines over that period of time.
I have seen way more failures caused by using to heavy of oil during a cold start up than I have seen by using too thin of oil in the heat of summer. 15W (the W stands for Winter) Viscosity is tested at 0*F the high end viscosity (the 40)is tested at 210* F. it is fine to run 15W-40 oil however any Start below 20* F without block heater produces a high rate of wear and scuffing on Crankshaft Bearings. Will one or two stats fail an engine, most likely not, but it does start the process.

Always ran 5-40 syn. And in the winter with the block heater below 32deg. on a thermostat plug. When I was working and had to start the truck at around 10 deg. the plugged in the truck didn`t even know it was cold out. I guess the issue would be going to work and at the end of the work day having to start a stone cold diesel with 15-40 and like you said "start the prosses". So a 5-40 would seem to be the answer for most conditions.

Oil usage in 6.7 Ford Diesel
Thanks for all of the comments. I really like the list if approved oils. I also agree with the comment that pulling that 15000 lb trailer is severe service. I believe using full synthetic is the way to go. I am going to double check with Ford Engineers because I work part time at a Ford dealership. I will let you what Ford says.
