Up Grade Spare Tire
On our 09 3400 RL we change out the four China Bombs with 235/85R16/G G614. The spare tire we when with a LT235/85R16/E BFG Commercial Tire for one half the cost of the G614. Same size tire yet the spare is load range E not a G rated tire. Question ? Is this OK.
Thanks,
Les

Where I live it would be OK ... some people on the West coast have had the mobile tire service refuse to install a spare that wasn't the same tire size. Moral here ... change your own round black thing if possible ... a spare is just that ... a spare. My force field is now up for those about to respond further!

Looks like the same size tires to me, diesel? I think the spare would be fine for emergency use, which is what a spare is for anyway.

That's the plan for me too, it it gets me off the interstate and into the nearest tire dealer it will have done it's job. I don't need another $200 spare tire to do that....

If you get that "Not gonna change it" dude, just show him the rating on the sidewall of the tire and the axle ratings on the side of the rig, then explain the math. That you are overrated on the current tires, but the spare meets the ratings too.
This should not be an issue, except if you run into a dude who will NOT put an LT on a trailer. There are some out there that will not do that no matter what the rating.
But if you have your own tire changing gear, then there's nothing to worry about if you do this yourself or if you can find a fellow MOCer to get help. I wouldn't give you any crap and probably most MOCers won't either. It could have been worse and you could have kept a China bomb as a spare. Some of us might not do that ourselves but other members have done this just to be able to limp someplace to get a suitable replacement or repair.

Here's the thing about the spare, you never know what will happen. We put a G614 on as a spare. last fall we had a failure on our IS suspension and drove over 120 miles over northern Indiana's railroad tracks and bad roads with all the weight on one side of the rig on a single G614. That tire appeared ok, but could have suffered unseen damage. Once the suspension was fixed we just put the spare on to replace the over loaded regular tire and put that one on for the spare. Had the original spare been only a spare then I would have had to buy a new G614 and would have had no use for the old one.

Many of our MOC members are using the BFG on all four. It is one Lonnie recommends. It is what I use as my spare. My spare wheel is stenciled "for trailer use only". I had a wallyworld guy refuse to install the LT tire so I went to the local Goodyear store and they did the installation.
Dick, it appears you have a "suspect" spare tire. I recommend you put a new BFG on as your spare.

Pineranch... lestx DID buy a new BFG spare when he bought the 4 G614s because it was less expensive than the G614s. He just wanted to confirm that it would make a good spare. Like you mentioned, it should make a suitable spare.
However, I would only use that spare to get to a tire store and get another G614 since it is not the same rating as the other G614s. I don't think I'd run three G614s and the single BFG for the long haul.

What would a emergency service do with a car that has only a donut tire for a spare? It is not even close to the same size.
