New Granddaughter

Our son and his wife in Winchester, VA had a baby girl on 6/4/09. Name is Elizabeth Ann. We are going out to help them out since she had a c-section. I guess they need moral support from Mom and Dad. We will be leaving on Thursday and will be gone abut two weeks. Will be taking the Monty--probably go straight out on I-80 then drop down through Maryland. Any suggestions for good overnight places?

Congratulations. There are several nice campgrounds down in Lancaster county, which is south of I80. However, I believe you will be dropping down I70 into Maryland. Terrie and I met in Washington, D.C. but haven't been camping out that way for a long time. When will you be coming through the Chicago area?

If that route puts you on the Ohio Turnpike they have some rest/service areas that allow overnight camping. NOT all the service areas do.

We thought yea, right, it will be sooooo noisy, but, last spring on the way out of Broadway (just a hop, skip and a jump south of Winchester on 81) we decided we would give it a try anyway.

Pleasantly surprised, the noise from the toll way did not bother us much.

If you are gonna try the National Road I 68, be prepared to drive the grades, they are surprisingly, well, steep. NOT like the Rockies, eh?? But, it was an experience and goodness, it was a pretty ride! WOW

Give that new grandbaby a HUGE MOC

I so envy you as I love tiny brand new babies. My grandchildren are grown and I didn't get to see my great-granddaughter until she was almost 5 months old.

Congratulations and enjoy, enjoy.
Happy trails...........................

Congrats on the new baby!!! It's great that you are going to help them out.

Ditto on the I-68 comments, that route has many long steep up and down grades. I just went through that route just two weeks ago but I was not towing anything. I was shocked on how many rigs with trailers went on that road too fast and in any lane they felt like. I recall one rig was a Chevy 2500, towing a three axle SOB toy trailer and rode his brakes all the way down the hill. I had to go 75 mph to pass him and it took a while to pass him since he was probably going 72 or 73 mph. He was weaving side to side within the lane and the brake smell was awful. I guess he didn't know how to tap the trailer brake to stop the swerving trailer. Fortunately he was on the rightmost lane and I was two lanes over, but his weaving still made me nervous. My brother was even more nervous since he was the passenger and kept seeing this guy weave towards us.

I don't know about camping areas, but there are members here who could recommend some camperships that provide as much as 50% discounted campsites around most areas. Are you referring to on the way or at your destination? I hope you find one close to your new grandchild or else you can move each night to parking lots that allow overnighting.
