Help with Parks in Mt. Rushmore area

We will be heading toward Mt. Rushmore area from Yellowstone this Friday. It will probably take us a couple of days to get there and would like any info on RV parks in that area.

When we visited there a few years back we stayed at the Rafter Bar J RV park. I think that was the name of it. It is a huge park and hopefully this time of year there should be plenty of room.

Have fun and good luck.

We stayed at Custer State Park and had a great time.
We enjoy our countries State Park system.
enjoy the trip, you will remember it for years to come,

Rafter J is a very nice park. It was full this summer when we were there so we stayed at Horsethief RV Resort which was nice enough but nothing like Rafter J. Both are close to most of the attractions.

Would highly recommend Rafter J RV Park in Hill City. Worked there last summer for 4 months and it is a nice park. Spots are huge. Only 8 miles from Mt. Rushmore, 12 from Crazy Horse. While there you need to eat at The Alpine Inn for dinner. Only 2 choices...small or large filet with salad, potatoe and veggie. Last year the small was $895 large $1095. The dessert menu is to DIE for. Have fun. Teresa

You've timed it well. The Sturgis motorcycle rally ended August 15th. We unknowingly landed there years ago right in the middle of the rally and FINALLY found a site due to a cancellation. There were over 200,000 bikes there and upward to 500,000 in attendance.

We spent 2 weeks there the last of July and stayed at Custers Gulch RV Park. It is between the town of Custer and Custer State Park and close to all the other attractions. The sites are very spacious full hook up w/ gravel pads. Sites 19-23 were the best in my opinion as they offered the most shade.
The owners were very nice and take great pride in their park.

Rafter Bar J is also very nice and we have stayed there in the past. We didn't return there this time strictly because of the cost.

I second the suggestion on the Alpine Inn. Hope you enjoy your visit, it's a nice area.

IF you have military priveleges, the FamCamp at Ellsworth is adequate and fairly cheap. Not too far from everything. If you don't have priveleges, oh well!!!! Have a great time.....

Thanks for all the suggestions. We ended up getting reservations at Custers Gulch. We weren't sure if we would find anything since it's Labor Day weekend, but they were able to get us in dry camping the first night then full hookups for the rest of our time there.

This forum is awesome. We are planning on heading all the way east to Maine then down the east coast a ways then heading back west. I'll be asking for more suggestions as we go.

Sometimes takes a few days before I can get wifi, but I check on this forum everytime I do.
