Like Steve, I cross reference to the Motor Carrier Atlas. Unfortunately, the atlas provides maps of non-truck routes but DOES NOT list ristrictions on these routes. A good example is the scenic parkway along Lake Ontario in New York. There are arches that are only nine feet on the edge and 13 feet in the middle. They are not listed in the atlas.

Is there any warning at all??!!!

What do you do in a situation like this if there is no warning or you just didn't see the warning?

The atlas probably doesn't list everything, as Dave said, but it lists nearly any road we ever travel, including most two-lane highways. But there is always the possibility the atlas is not up to date or does not include a particular road.

As for what we do in a situation where we find a low clearance situation unexpectedly... The only one I recall had big warnings well in advance along with "use highway xx." I always watch for problem areas but have really not found it to be much of a problem. And it's been rare that I've hear of anyone having a problem with a bridge clearance so it must not happen too often.

Unfortunately, the parkway in New York has no specific warning --just that the route was not for commercial vehicles. Each bridge is marked on the side and center. And, you are right, it was scary.

Hi Dave,
Yikes! Parkway in New York = No Commercial Vehicles or trailers...only warning you get and we hear of those arches pinning trucks/trailers all the time. I have the reverse problem going down Jersey Parkway towing the Monty (feeling of guilt that I'm breaking a law) although its legal and there is no low over passes.

Best solution and keep you from getting a headache, don't try to drive a 12'6" high vehicle under a 12'0" bridge. You might end up like the Ford Ad. on television. Just trying to be smart. We went through Alabama a couple of years ago and come upon one of these. It was only 9 ft clearance. Sure glad I was paying attention. If you have to use that kind of route, I think I would drive up to it and get out and look. Might keep you from getting a headache.

Steve's idea for using the Motor Carrier Atas is a good one. I use that as well and so far have been succesful. However the best practice is 'when in doubt ask'.

Guess why I bought a TT instead of a 5th . I would rather be long than worry about taking off the top of a 5th under a bridge. Besides, the bath/bedroom area is huge, no stairs to trip over, I have the whole covered truck bed to store stuff in and of course, the TT is cheaper than a 5th.

Yes, measure with the TV and RV hooked up. When we had the 2nd AC installed in the bedroom, this pushed our overall height to 13 feet 2 inches (3475RL with F-350 King Ranch). I don't like anything under 13'6" to be sure. Check the website for low bridges and WATCH OUT as you drive. In San Antonio, on IH 37, there are some bridges that are 13'6". I don't remember ever seeing a semi on this stretch of IH 37 that is just south of downtown San Antonio. Yes, there are warning signs. When I go to South on IH 37 to the coast, I by pass the this area just to eliminate the potential problem.

And I traded UP from a TT to a 5th for the awesome interior space, incredible storage yet still have the ability to make turns in city traffic without taking out the stop sign

Unless I ever decide to drive on the older roads of the East coast I think I'll not have to worry about most bridges.
