Wheel Bearing Grease

OK, went through and read the other posts about greasing the bearings, ez lube vs hand pack, no problem as everyone has a different opinion. I have a question about the kind of wheel bearing grease. I used Mercury Quicksilver 2-4-C grease with Teflon for my old boat trailer wheels, new boat different wheels. I have several tubes of this grease left.

Is it OK to use for the Monty Wheels?

That grease, IIRC is spline grease. Almost like never seez. I would buy a quality bearing grease. JMHO

After a little web browsing, I'm going to agree with the previous posters ... go buy some lithium wheel bearing grease, your fiver deserves it. Others may chime in on their preferences.

Possibilities right off the Lippert web site
Mobil Oil Mobilgrease HP
Exxon/Standard Ronex MP
Kendall Refining Co. Kendall L-427
Ashland Oil Co. Valvoline Val-plex EP Grease
Pennzoil Prod. Co. Premium Wheel Bearing Grease 707L

Although you stated you've use your grease for a previous boat trailer ... apparently it's really not made for wheel bearings. I did find the following online.

Applications for what you have are as follows
Steering Systems
Throttle/Shift Cables & Linkages
Remote Controls
Grease fittings
Propeller Shafts
Swivel Pin
Drive Shaft Splines
Tilt Lock Mechanism
Hinge Pins

You need a high-temp grease for wheel bearings. I would make sure it's for wheel bearings and not for just run-of-the mill greasing.

Lithium is what the axle brochure states. Also cautioned not to mix different greases.

Grease is cheap. Get the proper stuff. A good quality NLGI #2 Lithium base wheel bearing grease is what is recommended and there is a list in your book or on Dexter Axles site.

The wrong grease could be very expensive.

The Merc grease is a good grease for the intended applications but nowhere do they mention wheel bearings.
