Any information on replacing a king mattress? - Montana Owners Club

I've looked throughout the search topics and can't bring up anything on replacing our king-sized mattress only used for shortly over two months. I know I've read of others replacing their mattresses and are interested to know what brand and size will work for our 2005 Monty. The original is not the quality we expected to have in our unit. Happy New Year to all and safe travels for 2006.

Just take your mattress measurements to your local mattress store ... they should be able to help you. When we replaced our queen mattress, we were able to special order the size we needed. You may also want to consider the Sleep Number bed ... lots of choices out there.

We did just as Vicki says when we replaced our queen. We had it made at a local mattress shop and we had a choice of price ranges which also determines quality. Having it custom made didn't cost any extra. I think on your King you have to have the edges rounded at the bottom but they should be able to do that.

We are going to order the camper with the queen size bed, more room (in the camper), but having inspected the mattress both at the plant and in the campers we will give it a try but are prepared to order a higher quality, firmer mattress more suitable to our needs. (see mobilvan I did it without using the C word) We have talked with our local mattress shop and a high quality mattress can be made to your order for a very reasonable price. We did this in our TT and we did not spend as much time in it as we will in the Montana. We wanted to keep the good mattress we had bought for the TT but we had moved the camper mattress to our "stick house" in a spare bedroom and our kids called it our " bed of nails" One of them snuck into the house when we were not home, threw it out and bought a better one. We replaced our queen mattress with one of those space age foam which we purchased from Costco. This type of mattress is ten times better than the orignal equipment.

Hey Dick and Joan,
Northstar hit on something. We were going to replace ours due to comfort issues. We ended up trying and buying a 3 inch memory foam pad online to try on top of the mattress. Best sleeping decision we ever made. Ended up buying another one for the house and love them both. I don't know if you ever tried sleeping on the stuff, but we love it.

Those foam pads would make it softer but they do not add to the firmness..do they???Our problem is these Rv mattresses are not firm enough..

We purchased a memory foam topper at Wal-Mart and it made the mattress comfortable....we had a Cardinal that we purchased a very expensive mattress for and it was a nightmare getting it in and out of the RV and it was only a queen.... If you buy a new mattress be sure to stay within the size of the original, thickness, width and length...

If you have the $$$, you can't beat the Select Comfort. They have their own web site and cater to the RV. They are a little spendy but last for years.

Our mattress we had specially made is thicker than the original and causes no problems. The thinness of the original is one of the problems with it. On our other 5er the extra weight of the better mattress did cause a problem with the lifts that raise the bed but on the Monty it is not a problem. Probably better hardware.

To those of you who bought the memory foam mattresses at Costco and Walmart- was there a brand name on these or more than one type? Do you remember about what you paid on these? I've read about others (magazines) who love them.

I don't remeber the actual brand name, they are probably made by only a few companies. The big thing you want to ensure is that it is High density 4-lb. solid Visco elastic memory foam. I did a little homework before we bought ours.

We put a feather bed on top of our king. That along with a down comforter makes for a really comfortable solution.

The queen in the 5er isn't a normal size queen? We just bought a queen size tempur-pedic that we were going to use also in the 5er since we are going to be living in it for 6 plus months.

Most of the queens are short by a few inches. You can still use a regular queen by laying the end of the mattress up on the dresser when you pull the slide in. We did this for quite a while before we ordered one that is shorter. We don't notice the shorter length as we are both side sleepers. Ed is 6' and still doesn't have a problem. I use regular queen sheets that I took a tuck in and then put the tuck part under the pillows. Works great.

Thanks all of you that took the time to reply to our request for information on replacing our King-size mattress in our 2005 34.75RL. We decided to make do with the new one that came with it for now as we are leaving the south at Tucson, and heading home to Montana on Feb.1st. We are part-timers for 2 1/2 mths. in the winter. We did buy a Visco-memory foam 3 inch thick mattress at Costco in October and are not that happy with it. Our bed is still too soft. We bought one for our house a year ago and it's still not firm enough for our backs either. We are going to wait so that we can give our grandson our fiver mattress, instead of just giving it away to a store for trade-in. I am worried about the corner fitting up to the dresser. Hopefully, we can find one that will order it custom-made. Camping World here did not have any and didn't feel they could get us one. I agree that the Visco-foam makes the bed softer! Thanks and safe travels to all of you.

We cut the king platform down to a queen and put our Select Comfort bed in. Told the dealer to keep the king mattress.

We modified (Joe did) our Montana king size bed to take our house king size Select Comfort when we moved from the house into the Montana.
Joe cut the end of the platform off leaving four inches and then added a piece with a piano hinge (so it is a bit longer than before) and a few triangle leg braces to support it when down - So when we are ready to put the slide in, we lift the end of the mattress up and fold up our extension and the mattress being soft bends/folds with the trailer.
If anyone wants pictures I could take a few.
It works great for us and the dogs have a cave at the end of the bed they like because they can't be stepped on.
The dresser drawers still open just fine.
