Lug nut torque?

We have a 2955RL with 16" tires and I think the torque is 90.
I don't have access to the manual or I would look it up for you.

Just asked that today when I picked up my new one and they told me 120, I'm sure 110 would be fine as well.

I think we are gong to need some clarification on this. I picked our 2950 yesterday from the dealer after getting some warranty work done. I asked the technician what the torqe was and he said 90 pounds, however; if I recall, everything on the threads here state that it should be 120 pound. Any ideas where we can get the info. Thanks

Download the axle owners manual from Dexter or ALKO. It is full of information that you need to maintain your axles, brakes, wheels and tires.

I just received this from Keystone. The specs on torque may be differant on other units.


We have just reviewed your email. Stage one should be 20-30 ft/lbs,
stage two should be 55-60 ft/lbs, and stage three should be 110-120

It sounds like maybe the 110-120 is for the newer rigs but those of us with older ones have different numbers. At least per the manual. Ours is a 2003 model with the 16" wheels and Alko axles. The manual on ours says 90-110 if I recall correctly. I know I've been torquing to 100 for a long time now.

We have a '03 3655FL also. From the Al-Ko Owner's Manual, Pg 24. "Always use the WHEEL (my caps)manufacturer's recommendations, but do not exceed 120 ft/lbs of torque. Unless otherwise specified by the wheel manufacturer, use a final torque of 85-95 ft/lbs"


There is a small chart which follows and shows three stages of torque values and a picture of the tightening pattern. Those values are Stage One, 20-25; Stage Two, 55-60; and Stage Three 85-95. I use 90.

I too, received two notices from Keystone---one for the aluminum wheel issue and one yesterday on the wheel torgue issue. I would suggest calling Montana's Customer Service with the VIN in hand and they will, or at least should be able, to tell you if the 110-120 FtLb rating superceeds the older values. These increse in torque values probably came about from some failures at the lower torque settings or some NHTSA safety bulletin.

OK..here is the "straight word", from Keystone Customer Service ("Tina").

Keystone is a member of an engineering organization that evaluates all that sort of stuff. They have recommended the 110-120 ft/lbs torque value, and Keystone is recommending it for their RVs. This supersedes axle mfg's data. Use the "star" tightening pattern; loosen all the bolts to the Stage One values and then re tighten all to Stage Two, then to Stage Three values.

I suggest that you call Keystone Customer Service if you want verification or clarification. What I got today is good enough for me...I'll "git 'er done" tomorrow.

I just downloaded the pdf file on torquing lugnuts, the one at the above mentioned customer service page. It says essentially what PJ said. The new info supercedes the axle mfr's manuals.

I broke down and put away my old pointer type torque wrench and bought a click type today. I want to try it out anyhow but will wait until the slides have been retracted. On our model, all wheels are under the slides when slides are extended.

Here is a tip about lug nut torque. After you go through the sequence of tightning, after the final torque, paint a small slippage mark extenting across the nut onto the wheel. The next time you start on a trip, just look for the slip mark to know if your last torque application has moved, if it has, re-torque the wheel. I use fingernail paint as it is easy to remove. My 2955 calls for 90ft. lbs. and they have not moved since the last time I torqued them.
