A clean roof and front cap

Dear Old Dad is getting energetic and antsy to start camping. Even though I passed on info about cleaning the roof with a mop and blue dawn, reality set in when the cleaning process began. Had to resort to the old fashioned bristle brush to get good results (and I tried but could not convince DW that this is/was a women's job.....kidding....no flaming responses requires....I apologize.....I know better.....). Front endcap came amazingly clean with little effort using a rag and Lightning cleaner (have no idea what it is, where she got it, if it is good or bad for the decals.....but it worked. DW did say she would do the sides!!!! Owwww, my arms are sore now and it is time for yardwork that I have been putting off. Ordered some six inch vinyl letters for the rear cap (either for placement on top of window itself or just above the window on the end cap). Faith based connotation that will be on the rig for Gettysburg.

That is the name of it Glenn. It cleaned the front cap so well that all it took was a rag to clean it to look like new. Totally amazed me. The roof was not so amazing, took old fashioned elbow grease (it was it's first cleaning - but it looks better now than when we bought it).

Where does a person find "Greased Lighting" cleaner. I never heard of it.

DW thinks that she got it at Home Depot, possibly Lowes.

If Greased Lighting is like Simple Green, it's good stuff, but, at full strength, will take the wax off the gel coat.

Guys you can get greased lighting at wally world. It is very good but will for sure take off all the wax. I use awesome cleaner for the roof from dollar general it works great and will not hurt the roof. Greased lighting cleans tires great but will ruin alum wheels. no need to ask how I know this!!!!!. bobby

bncinwv.... We used to have a relative back in Oklahoma that made & sold "Greased White Lighting" back in the 1920s.

We also have 6" vinyl lettering we bought at Office Max and we put on the front cap just under the word "Montana" and also on the top right of the rear cap. Our wording says, " MOC-49". The 6" lettering turned out to be a perfect size for that amount of wording.

I plan on cleaning the roof today, maybe, well I need to, if I have to, I guess. Well if she don’t find me handsome maybe she will at least find me handy! Let me see now, how would Red-Green go about this? There has got to be a better way!

I mentioned something about the wife’s cleaning it and she said something like “yeah sure” so I guess that is out!”

Anyway I think there is a protective UV coating that may be a benefit. I think I might look into that also.

Bill,
My posts last year regarding cleaning the roof all centered around one simple statement....I am not going to!! However, if you are spending any time at all cleaning the infamous RV black streaks, the best way to minimize them is to clean the roof. My arms are still sore from using elbow grease and a bristle brush. And I much rather would have been visiting you at Carter Caves, but we have to get the rig ready for Memorial Day and Gettysburg. I think you will be impressed with the vinyl letters that we will put on prior to Gettysburg, but I will keep the sactual wording top-secret until we arrive, I am sure you have an idea what it is related to though!!! Bobby, that is interesting about the cleaner I used stripping the wax, because I could not tell, but I will be looking closer this evening. DW has been using diluted Simple Green on the sides, that Montana is starting to shine like new (this can be a REALLY bad precedent though.....you know....expectations for the future.....UGGHHHH!!)

I doubt that our rig will completely be finished by the rally but I would like for it to be. I got on the roof today and started cleaning it and I used detergent for washing clothes. I heard somewhere that should be ok. If not I would like to know about not using it. However, here is a photo of it after part of it was cleaned. I think I will be coating it also with some rubber roof treatment I have for ultra violet protection.

I also noticed there is another thread going about cleaning the roofs!

Now come on Bill,
Half a roof cleaning is not going to pass muster (LOL!!), although the pictures are nice to show the difference. It took about two hours on ours with the brush and dawn. Another reminder to all who are going to attempt any of this, please, please be careful up there, it is a long way down!!!!!

Talk about a long way down, you ought to see it from my view! Wow, and to think I don't even like heights either.

OBTW, Bingo, the roof is all the way clean. It was actually clean before I posted the photo! I was actually getting ready to start to add some roof treatment/protection. You know how one job leads to another, right? Well the vents over the sewer lines were so brittle that just bumping into them slightly with a brush they broke. Now I have to replace two of those. Getting ready to go and buy them now.

Bill, what are you going to use for the protection/treatment and how often do you apply it.

Thanks

I have 1 Gal of "Protect all Rubber Roof Treatment" that I was going to start using on the roof. The rain set in this evening and I don't know when I'll be able to finish it now. I was going to see how far it would go then try and find another gal or two to finish it with. It states on the label that it should last from 3 to 6 months depending on the climate your in.

My roof also needs little TLC. Did anybody used power washer to do the job?

I don't know about your power washer, but if I used mine with anything other than the "black" tip, it would rip the roof off. I don't think I would try that.

We did ours this last Tuesday. Thanks to what I've read on here, we used the blue dawn along with a cheap sponge mop from wally world. It worked pretty good. Had to scrub in a few places but you could see it work. The thing left now to do is put a protective coating on there. Have to wait until next week now because its rainig now and expected to rain all weekend. I actually was able to get DW up on the roof and help. It was her first time up there but hopefully, not her last.
