Beware of Wix fuel

We had Chevy serviced for this trip. About 3 hours from home she seemed to be running out of fuel and stopped. Towed in. Jim Fischer took rig to CG for us. Chevy dealer replaced Wix fuel filter with Delco. Dealer said that he hAd seen it happen several tim s recently. About $300 later all has been well. Jeff Johnson Chev near Hillsville Va is excellent. Less than 1 hour for repair, very polite and professional.

I for one just HATE taking my truck to a dealer for an oil change. But ever sense a non dealer oil change place put the wrong (cheaper) oil filter in my previous truck, I have changed my ways. That error cost me over $250 dollars. As a result nobody touches my truck but a Ford dealer. My F350 listed out at $67,000 (did not pay that for it) I can pay the dealer who has the proper parts to do the job correctly. The difference between a dealer and a non dealer oil change is about $50.00 dollars. When I can't afford that I will get out of RVing. JMHO

Del o might be made by Wix, but it is in an obvious plastic housing and Delco is in metal. Dealer said they had opened them to see problem and the actual filter element had collapsed and cut off flow.

I have heard of people who have had engines destroyed by a filter. That's why I only use OEM filters. They may cost a little more but this will never happen to you. I do use aftermarket fuel filters. The ones I use filter much better than the OEM filters. They are mounted between the cab and back wheel and catch much more dirt and water then the OEM filters. They have a lift pump built in that will pump much more fuel than the one in the tank so my high pressure pump is never starved for fuel. I can drain the water from them setting beside my truck. The first filter is a 10 micron and the second one is a 2 micron filter.

Wix has been known to make quality filters. Interesting that the dealer new where to look because of past history. Glad all is fine with your rig again.

I have used Wix fuel filters for several years and replace about every 8000 miles. The dealer does my oil change. I wasn't going to pay the dealer over $100 to change fuel filter. The first time they did it and then after that I change it myself.

I buy genuine ford oil and fuel filter kits on line for 50-60% of what the Ford dealer would charge me

If the filter removed was plastic then it is not the filter Wix made for that engine it is a filter for a much older John Deer tractor. I had notice while working on one of the JD tractors that the fuel filter would fit in place of the filter on the 2005 Duramax owned by the same people. The difference is the JD is a 4 cylinder diesel. This would result in a much higher fuel flow and would account for the internal failure

Fortunately my dealer here in Florida is competitive with the quick change shops so I have always had the service work done by the dealer. One thing I did not let the dealer do was change the cabin filter on our Malibu they wanted in excess of $40 for a $6 filter.

I have posted this same issue in the past. I too experienced fuel starvation under load using the Wix filter. Switched to a Delco filter and all is well. The Wix seems to be too restrictive. Phil, what is the source of your information on the filter manufacturer?

Hi

As far as the information about Wix making the OEM filter it came from a company that has now been merged with Advance Auto parts. They have closed all of the stores but I would think that Advance would have the same information if you can now find anyone working there that would understand what you are asking.

As for the JD that was an observation. I had resealed the filter housing on the 2005 Duramax and then worked on a hydraulic problem on the tractor when I compared the 2 filters. The only apparent difference was the outer shell was plastic on the tractor filter. I did not open either filter to see if there was a difference inside and I did not try to fit the Duramax filter to the tractor. I would never use the tractor filter on the Duramax. There are 2 reasons for this one is I wouldn’t know if the filter element would be correct and the Duramax filter is close to the exhaust manifold the tractor filter was on the opposite side from the exhaust manifold I would be concerned about heat on the plastic outer case.

Phil P

PS:

I don’t do my own service on my truck because I have a insurance policy that covers failures like the injection high pressure pump that cost $6,000 to repair and they require all work on the systems they cover to be done by ASE certified technicians. While I have certifications from the federal government down to the manufacturer of similar equipment they don’t comply with the terms of the policy.

I decided in 2006 with my 1st Ford Diesel that only a Ford dealer would do any maintenance on the engine. I am still doing that and feel confident that the service is done correctly, any software upgrades are installed, and the truck was properly inspected and serviced. Others have a different approach--that is OK with me. I am sticking with Ford for service--and if you check the internet, there are coupons that can save you money.

Interesting. I wonder if the person relaying the information to you was crossed up on who made what for who. I worked for CARQUEST for years( I assume the company to which you refer ). Wix did make filters for CARQUEST. I am actually trying to find out if Wix does make the Delco filters. They are both made in the USA.
Regardless, to the OP's point, if the filter change solved the problem as it did mine, that's all that matters. Wix and AC Delco are both good quality products.

Yeah...only use OEM parts on my truck. AC Delco oil and fuel filters only. Change the oil, tranny outter, and fuel filters and oil myself. I am hoping I'm saving a bunch. My dealer wanted north of $100 just for an oil change. I'm changing it myself for less than $40.

Funny...thinking AC Delco parts were good....I put their rotors and pads on my wife's Camry. Big mistake. Wow did the front end shake. Replaced with OEM Toyota rotors and pads and it was back to normal.

I have been in the auto repair business for 40 years. I am a GM guy and always used a/c delco only then one day I was examining the delco stuff and realized it was not made in the usa only packaged here. I know wix is made here and that is what I now use. I want nothing but the best for my vehicles and I do not believe a/c delco is what they use to be. Being an independent shop I never trusted the dealer always tell my people find an honest repair person and stick with them. Seen to many dishonest dealerships taking advantage of people.

Before my store was a Carquest it was an independent. They had extensive recourses that the other Carquest stores didn’t have. The original owner had been in the business for many years.

An example is I needed a complete set of glow plugs for a Duramax the OEM cost by memory was about $360 they were able to get them from the company that manufactures them for GM and sold them to me for $90 they came in the GM packaging.

Unfortunately Advance doesn’t have this kind of expertise and now the local NAPA store has a booming business. I tried to purchase 2 sockets in ¾ drive from Advance they had no source for this product NAPA will have them here in a couple of days.

On several occasions, I have found filters that are the same size as an OEM, but the innards and filtering characteristics are not the same...or as good.

Those of you that are dealer loyal as to fluid changes ... guess who does most of the oil changes? It sure isn't a Master Tech unless it's a slow day, it's more like the guy at the bottom of the totem pole who talks to the lot attendant alot.
