Campgrounds along I-35

will be travelling I-35 from Des Moines IA to San Antonio TX. Like to stop near Des Moines, Kansas City, Wichita, Oklahoma City, Dallas, and SA. Any suggestions for great big rig campgrounds would be appreciated..

Been several years, but we stayed at the OKC KOA and it was good. Would stay again when/if we go back. A few miles east on I-40.

In San Antonio we stayed at Traveler's World. Again it was good and we would stay again. Apparently popular with snowbirders as we were there in early April and they were having a "good bye for the season" dinner for those about to start the reverse migration. Located on a main street that goes direct to downtown and the Riverwalk, Alamo, Mercado, etc. Parking my F350 CC long bed was no problem a short walk to the Riverwalk. Or there is a bus stop right in front of the park if you prefer not to drive. But if you do chose this, ask me first about directions. One street you do not want to take due to bad rail crossing. KOA also gets good reviews but I have not stayed there.

If I might suggest - take 35W thru Fort Worth - 35E thru Dallas is never fun.
We stayed at Cowtown for T-Giving last year -https://www.cowtownrvpark.com/ , just on the west side of town and a pleasant drive into downtown if desired. All Pull Thru Spaces. Would recommend it.

AirCapitol Rv Park in Wichita is a nice stop over place. I just spent two months there while working in the area. Nice friendly staff. Sites are close together but lots of space for backing into the back ins and the pull through seem pretty easy to get into.

Near Ok. City Mustang Run RV Park - about 15 miles W. of I35. It was very nice and almost new.
Near Des Moines, Griffs Valley view rv park is nice. Kind of in the country - a horse pasture next door when we stayed.

I live in Kansas City. Worlds of Fun Village is popular off I-35 for larger Rigs and access right off the interstate.

It's a little off the I-35 path but Fleming Park/Blue Springs is one of the favorites for 40' trailers when others have come through for a visit.

And yet another, again off the I-35 path is Smithville Lake.

IH-35 campgrounds - Texas

Just north of the Red River in OK there is the Winstar Casino and a Good Sam Campground. I have never stayed there but it is on our list to do soon.

You should definitely take I35W thru Fort Worth (NOT I35E thru Dallas).
There is a little construction going thru Fort Worth but it's not bad mid-day.

Near Texas Motor Speedway (north of Fort Worth) there is Northlake Village RV. We stayed there for a week while I was working nearby. It is nice.

I think the BEST place in all of DFW is The Vineyards Campground in Grapevine, which is ~15 minutes east of I35 down Hwy 114, but easy to get to. We have stayed many times and we love that place!!

Just south of Fort Worth is Yogi Bears Jellystone Park. We stayed there one night...it is ok but it's way over-priced for my tastes. If you have kids with you I suppose it might be worth it.

Continuing south - there is an old KOA in the town of West...pass!...keep going a few more miles to the I35RV park referenced above in post #2. We have never stayed there but it looks very nice.

If you have never stopped for gas at a Bucee's be sure to stop at the one in Temple TX, or the one north of San Antonio in New Braunfels. You won't believe how nice roadside gas stops have become! Also Slovacek's in West is a nice stop for BBQ or kolaches. Old-school Stuckey's on steroids x 1 million.

There is an old KOA just south of Belton - pass!

There are some nice paces north of Austin in Georgetown a few minutes off the interstate - have never stayed there but they look nice, plus there are 2 Corp parks at Lake Georgetown.

If you want to stay in Austin - there is an old KOA a few miles south of downtown now called Austin Lone Star RV Resort. Stayed there years ago in the pop-up with kids. Driving by it still looks nice. It is gated.

Crestview RV in Buda has a campground behind the dealership. I have never stayed there but it is next to Cabellas if you need to shop.

Just north of San Marcos is Plum Creek RV Resort. Looks nice but have never stayed there.

Just south of San Marcos is Canyon Trail RV Park across from the Outlet Mall. It's ok for an over-night. There is a for sale sign up now - Looks like the guy is trying to sell the land and retire.

Camping World is just north of New Braunfels if you need to shop.

I always notice River Ranch RV Resort under the I35 bridge in New Braunfels but have never stayed there. In October '98 we had a 100 yr rain event and the place was 20' under water but they have rebuilt.

Hill Country RV resort is just south of New Braunfels. Stayed there years ago with kids and went to Schlitterbahn water park. I remember it as more of a mobile home park but it was years ago. It is sort of up and over a hill on the east side of the highway - not visible from I35, so I don't know what it looks like today.

A few miles south of New Braunfels is Stone Creek RV Resort - looks ok based on drive-by at 70 mph.

In San Antonio - I agree with the post above - Travelers World is nice and convienient to downtown - if you can get in. Good Luck. We always stay at the KOA and love it. I stayed there when I was a kid for Hemisfair '68 and have been back dozens of times since. It's a no-brainer for us. During the October 1998 flood - the KOA was 6' underwater. That prompted them to start building new facilites to make it the great place it is today.

Bluebonnet Ridge in Terrell is nice, a little south of the metro area. I35 through Dallas is a nightmare, and there doesn’t seem to be an off time to go.

IH35E thru Dallas

IH35E thru Dallas - in addition to nightmare traffic and road construction - there are very few RV campgrounds between (north end) Denton and (south end) Hillsboro.

Just south of Denton there is an old KOA now called Destiny RV Park. I saw Neil Armstrong walk on the moon there on the black and white television they had in family room back in the day! But I don't think they have fixed the pot holes in the campground streets since the moon landing.

There are some Corp parks on Lake Lewisville that I am not familiar with.

Sandy Lake RV Park is located at IH35 and George Bush Tollway. I have only driven by it, never stayed there. The curb appeal did not strike me - but it may be nice...don't know.

Basically - If you decide to drive IH35E thru Dallas- you will not pass a campground worth staying at until I35 RV Resort north of Waco (discussed above).

We have been on I-35 from Duluth, MN to OK City with only a few traffic issues and campgrounds were usually available--Kansas City was the exception--we stayed in MO! The point is from OKC to SA, I recommend US 281. Yes a few small towns but nice campgrounds and some great BBQ at Stephenville, TX. AND no traffic or construction jams! Easy on the nerves and the tow vehicle and RV. Have a great trip and enjoy San Antonio--great local golf near Travelers World!

As others have stated - stay away from Dallas. Take the I-35 W route through Fort Worth. The Czech Stop in West, TX is a must: http://www.czechstop.net/

The Texas Ranger Hall of Fame & History Museum is in Waco and worth the stop. https://www.texasranger.org/

Also, I would have recommended the Elite Cafe in Waco, but they have closed and Chip and Joanne Gaines (HGTV Fixer-upper) have opened it as Magnolia Table - https://magnolia.com/table/.

I-35 will jam-up around Austin. There is no good time to go through Austin just take your time.

SH 130 toll road around Austin

FYI...if you are curious and want to bypass Austin by using the SH130 toll road...

Cost for 4 axles (2 truck + 2 fifth wheel)...
To go 54 miles from the north beginning of SH130 (north of Georgetown) to just south of Austin and back to IH35 (Buda, TX)....
~$25 with a TxTag or ~$33 without a TxTag.

Cost to go all 85 miles - the whole length of SH130 to San Antonio (intersects with IH10 on the east side of SA)
~$44 with a TxTag or ~$55 without a TxTag

If you don't have a TxTag on your vehicle - the bill will be mailed to you!

Great Area. Explore going west on parallel lines, just south of new Braunfels and north of San Marcus. Glass cutting shop, glass blowing shop, saw mills, history and that's before you get to Fredericksburg and Kerrville. On highway 80, just west of the toll road is a great places to visit that has a lot to do with pecan: nuts, oil, and BIG slabs of wood (Swift River Pecan

In OKC the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum is worth a visit. Especially if you are old enough to remember all the old cowboy TV and movie stars.

And the Oklahoma National Memorial and Museum (Murray building bomb site) is a really sobering experience.

Takes Passport America. Usually crowded, but pull thru for travelers.

Stayed at the huge Wynn Star Casino in Thatcherville OK. Nice, concrete everywhere. And if you go to the casino and get a player's card they'll comp your camping and give you a nice candy bar.
The KOA in Topeka KS. IS NICE. A little hard to get there but just a little hop from the turnpike. (I35)
