2006 Montana 34ft

What is better to tow with a dually or a 4x4?

I have a 4x4 dually and i wound't have it any other way. I have only used the 4x4 once with the rv on and at that time I was glad to have the extra control in the snow storm.

The 4X4 part has little to do with towing other than it will decrease the tow capacity somewhat..it has everything to do with getting stuck and being able to get unstuck.. personal choice on your part.

I Quote my reply to "Montana 34 5er" in the "Tow Vehicles & Towing" category...

In many cases the best way to see what we are all using is to simply look at our individual signatures
or take a look at the Owners Rigs Pages for an actual photo of their recommendations.

Over the years I have found that whatever they are using is what they will recommend. Right or wrong, our male egos won't allow us to say anything else.
Good luck in your search.

As Richfaa says, a 4X4 aloows you to get stuck further from help than 4X2. In 3+ years with our 4X2, I've not been anywhere where I needed a 4X4 to get into or out of. And again, it's personal preferance. If you live in snow country and have a dually a 4X4 is almost imperative since every time you stop you're stuck. A dually makes 6 tracks in the snow. Mine makes 2.

I've been in a few camgrounds in CO that my 4x4 helped a great deal. I'm not saying you couldn't have gotten by with a 4x2 but I used my 4x4 and was glad I had it. Of couse during the winter it's nice but that's just driving, not towing.

Get a 4X4 because you actually need one not because the 4X4 decal looks cool on the side of the truck. If you drive it year round in snow country, you need it, if you live up a dirt and sometimes muddy road..you need it. If you drag the Montana over hill and dale across the desert or in areas were you know you are going to get bogged down..you need it..Just get it because you need it..You can buy a lot of road service membership for the cost of the 4X4 option.

I've been in a bad situation twice and if it was't for 4X4 I would still be there! I think it's the safe way to go. My opinion of course.
