Basement Door Lock

I have a 2006 3400 Montie and whenever we move it the large basement door lock slips off and comes unlocked. The bracket on the lock isn't long enough. I have tried to find a longer bracket but am told they don't come any longer. Has anyone else had this problem and solved the problem? If so please let me know. Thanks!

Hello pdferg,
I had the same problem. The frame for the basement door was smaller than the opening it is set into. I fixed it by installing some shims between the bottom of the door frame, and the opening. I bought some strips of wood from Lowe's that are about 3/16" thick by 1 3/4" wide, removed the screws from the bottom of the door frame, cut 2 lengths of the wood strips, set them in place, and secured them with the frame screws. I don't know if this is the best method, but it's fast and easy.

I'll send pictures shortly.

On edit - I'll have to wait until it gets dark I guess. There is too much light looking out from the dark compartment.

pdferg,
It rained all night here so I didn't get the pics I wanted. Maybe these will help even though the details are hard to see. I tried to get in the compartment so I could close the door, and then thought better. It's pretty small when you actually try to climb in,

Now that is a dedicated MOCer who would climb inside just to take pictures. Nice job Lonnie.

Thanks for all the tips. I was ready to take it to a dealer for such a simple repair. I repaired the lock problem and it works great. Thanks again!

I am having this problem with my roadside basement door on my 3400. The top cam pops off the top ledge on the frontside door. The lock on the bottom of the same door has to be latched to prevent the door from popping open going down the road.

This seems to be a common problem. Apparently the engineer that designed the jig to drill the hole missed his calculation by about 1/8". I had to replace mine with a longer catch that would stay latched.

All our latches on all our compartment doors work Ok ,have never come loose or had to be adjusted to fit properly.Look at the positive side about the keys..If you lose yours just ask the guy next to you to open your compartment for you..

Hubby fixed the same problem on our 3255 and now the new 3600 by cutting a piece of aluminum about 1" wide and 3" long and pop riveting it behind the lip.

Good solutions, Lonnie and Sunshine.

Pat, I found a lock with a longer tab at Camping World. RV dealers may have it also. I just pulled the longer tab and put it on my lock. Now I have one doing the same on the other side and may try Lonnie's or Virgil's idea on this one.
