Brake life?
How long / how many miles should the brakes last on our Montanas? We do about 4000 to 5000 miles per year. I did a wheel bearing service and brake inspection and all looked good.
Any tips or pointers from the long term owners?

It all depends on how and where you drive. We have 56k on our unit and are still on the original brakes. I bought new brake assemblies 4 years ago anticipating the need to change them in the near future. Each year when I service the bearings I check and still have adequate lining left on the shoes. Proper adjustment of the brakes and using the exhaust brake really minimize wear. Jim

Thanks Jim. I agree that the exhaust brake and gears greatly extend the life. The shoes just looked wimpy to me. I guess I am too used to real truck parts! I will do another inspection after this winter's trip.

When you do have to replace the brakes, highly recommend that you consider putting your money into a disk brake upgrade. Huge improvement in stopping distance and much easier to maintain going forward.

I would think that the linings would get old over time. I have never gone more than 2 years without replacing brakes on my cars.

I haven't replaced brake liners on anything in over 20 years. My 08 F250 only has 77000 miles on it and the brakes are good for at least another 50000 miles.
