I had the local parts store order me up some and will be putting them to the test this fall. I have to wear boots where I work and the heal of the boot has wore a hole thru the factory mat in 20k miles. I want to get something there before winter and like you track all that snow and water inside.

Steve, that's some pretty bad mileage. Ours is closing in on 28k miles. We get 11.5 to 13 towing, overall (less in serious mountains and wind, better of flats and calm). Solo we get 18-19 at 70 mph on the highway and 16-17 in town. If I just reset the trip computer while on cruise on the highway it will get as high as 23 over ten miles or so in ideal conditions. Less in lesser conditions. But with real world stops and goes, etc., the numbers above are what we get. Winter diesel drops it about 2 mpg.

jackw87 -
what is your mpg just city/highway driving without towing.
Just filled up second full tank and only got 12. I was a little disappointed, wanting to get 14-15 just regular driving. I knew I would give up a little with the 4:30 rear end but still hope to do a little better.

Curt, these diesel engines will take 10k miles to get broke in good. Your mileage should increase over the next few tanks as it breaks in more. I got better mileage after I got upwords of 7500 miles on mine. Good luck!

Curt
I get 15 t0 16 HWY ,12.5 city and 9.5 70 10.5 Towing at 70 mph +/- 10 wish Icould give you good news but I am happy with the way it pulls. everybody wants better mileage but with the 430 gears and a 4/4I don't look for it to get much better Iknow that is not what you wanted to hear I have 10,320 On mine

I should have noted ours has 3.73 rear gears.
Curt, our 2003 6.0 started out not very good mpg and increased with mileage, peaking at about 32k miles. This 2005 is acting pretty much the same way. You should expect your mileage to get better with miles. The 4.30 gears will reduce it some but I wouldn't think it would be more than maybe 1 mpg difference from the 3.73 gears we have.

Thanks for the input guys. I keep hearing the more miles on a desiel the better it runs. I'm not at all unhappy. I love the truck. I wasn't expecting as great a driving vehicle as it is. I'm just new to the desiel engine. I had a C3500 chevy w/ a 7.4L Vortec and it only got 11 mpg uphill, downhill, with air or without air, it didn't matter, 11 was the magic number, and only 8 towing my TT before I traded for the Monty. So I now have twice the truck and am already ahead of the game with only 700 miles on it. I had the holes predrilled this morning for the hitch rails and then had it Rhino lined this afternoon. They will install the rails Monday and I am upgrading to a 16K hitch with the double pivot. The dealer is only charging me the price difference between the two hitches since it is so new. I only pulled 1 time about 90 miles and I knew it wasn't safe. Sure wish one could find an honest salesman that would level with you when you ask the questions like "will my truck handle this trailer?!" But then I guess they wouldn't sell as many trailers. Guess you better do your homework before you go shopping. I was just fortunate the Ford Family Pricing plan came along when it did. Thanks to the Internet and this Forum, I've learned a lot and still learning. Thanks again for all your info.

Good choice, Curt. I think you'll be very happy with how your new Ford tows that Montana. The mileage should improve, so hang in there on that. And enjoy that new Montana, too!
