ULSF Diesel Fuel

Just a question about the ULSF diesel fuel. I thought that all fuel stations had to convert to ULSF diesel by Jan. 2010. While in Southern Texas, South Padre Island, we could not find a fuel station that sold ULSF. Even Wal-Mart was selling LSF, 500 PPM. Had a hard time finding the right fuel for the newer truck. Does anybody know if that's the law?

Me thinks that December 1, 2010 is the mandatory date for all states.

I also think that you ran into a station that still had the old label of LSD instead of the new label ULSD. Since September 2007, almost all on-hiway providers have been dispensing ULSD. Only non-hiway vehicles can run the regular diesel, and I think the tinted with a red dye for identification.

I don't think the distributors are going to put regular diesel in their tanker trucks for a few stations on the way. Many of those tanker trucks fill up the many different name service stations, like Shell, Chevron, Exxon, and don't necessarily have to have the logo on the side of the tanker. The pipelines that cross the U.S. carry gasoline and diesel from point A to point B. Additives are put in by the particular seller of their product.

Example is the line going down through florida. One big line with different distribution points along the way. All the same gas, all the same diesel. Just specific additives put in by the selling company.

Yep! We scoured the Island for ULSD, we had to go either to Brownsville by Sam's club, or out the highway to that station on the left at a highway intersection about 35 miles away. Padre needs to get with the program...

Could it be that the fuel stop operator has not installed the new logo? Most of the logos I have seen do not seem to be very fresh- JMHO- Don

When we pulled in to Victoria Texas we really needed fuel like right now so we stopped at a Shell station and they did not have ULSF. The attendant said they would be getting it soon but the sticker on the pump was correct. He told us of a station down the road that did have it but it was not on the main highway.

Send a message via MSN to KathyandDave
I asked about this in Canada, but got blank looks until somebody said that it's been ULSF for awhile.
About pipelines, it's my understanding that the refinery blends a quantity of fuel to the customer's spec, then sends it up the pipe, where it gets taken off by the delivery storage facility and pumped into a tank. At the end of the order, the refinery puts in some sort of filler, then a different blend for the next customer. The delivery facility routes the new blend to a different tank. Does anybody know something more about this?

Alright! I've been quiet long enough.

It is ULSD for Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel, not ULSF.

I just had to say it.

As an employee of a co. that sells, installs, and services petroleum equipment, I thought it my duty to research and report to everyone about the USLD regs. Waynem is correct that USLD is the only highway diesel that can be sold after 12/1/10. Jim

For anyone headed North to Canada, we have been ULSD since Mid-Oct. 2007. There has been no time where both LSD and ULSD could be sold for highway use after that date. Pumps don't have an identifier for that reason.

Thanks for the post on Canada. We are headed there (BC and Alberta) in July and I was about to ask that very question!

When we were in California back in early 2008, none of the stations had stickers indicating LSD or ULSD. I finally started asking questions since we needed ULSD. It seems California had already mandated ULSD for highway use and thus no sticker for differentiation was necessary. It was a concern to me, being from out of state and unaware of CA law, though.

We've needed ULSD since early 2003 and in all our travels have run across only four stations that had diesel but not ULSD. Just four. But, we visited South Padre Island on a day trip and had no need for fuel that day or likely we'd have multiplied that number.

It could be that the island caters more to the "off road" types and therefore just carry the LSD. Of course, if it is sold at a service stations, it will have to be "ULSD" come December 1, 2010.

Think ULSD ULSD ULSD ULSD ULSD ULSD (Don't know why that is bothering me!)
