50 AMP SERVICE

Are our 50 amp services, 50/120 volts or 50/240 volts?

Dennis,

The 50 amp service is probably 50 amps on each of the two 120 volt legs of a 240 volt service. Another way that trailers got a 50 amp service was to have a 30 amp and a 20 amp 120 volt service. Look at the main circuit breaker in your unit. If it is ganged (connected) together, and each breaker says 50 A, then it's the 240 volt setup.

The 240 volt plug is a 14-50R with four prongs where it plugs into the CG pedestal and a big twist-lock that plugs into the unit.

Go to this site http://www.myrv.us/Pgs/RV/50amp.htm for a better description and some pictures that might help explain it better.

Tell your electrician the 50 amp circuit is the same as a 4 wire 50 amp range(stove) circuit. He will know what to do.

Sweetfire, the 50amp service in your Monty is a 240 volt service just like in a house. But you will find that there only 120volt loads on it. This is because when you plug into a 30amp service with the 30amp to 50amp adapter the adapter croses the two live lines making them one 120volts on the same phase. Thus if you took a volt meter between the two live lines while pluged into a 30amp service you would not show any voltage between the two hot legs, but would show 120 volts between each one and neutral or ground. If this adapter did not do this you would only have electricity in 1/2 of your monty while pluged into a 30 amp service. If you have any question you can pm me at any time.
