Good Sam Insurance - My recent saga

Just thought I would pass along some recent dealings with my RV insurance carrier, Good Sam. I received my yearly billing, $570, and it had increased by $80. Why, because my credit score was decreased. The reason - my relatively short length of credit history, reported by Transunion. WOW!!! Absolute BS!!! My history goes back to the early 70’s and has been perfect. Today everything is paid for including properties, vehicles, and we pay our four active credit cards off each month. We may not carry a balance, but we have have a long history.

I called National General Insurance (Good Sam) and received a new quote over the phone, $367. I said put it in writing (e-mail) so I can review and compare limits and costs. Quote came, $390. A second quote came, $470. Third quote came minutes later, $470. I called agent, what’s going on? He said the deductibles had changed and thats why the costs are now $470. Huh! What happened to the $367. I said match my original deductibles as I asked and give me a breakdown so I can compare. Fourth quote came, $470, and still no breakdown for comparison on any quote so I have no clue what I would be buying. On the same day I received a quote directly from Good Sam for $490, again no info attached.

Weekend goes by and today I received a bill in the mail from Good Sam for $570 with changes to my deductables. But, here’s the best part. A second letter also came stating that they had tried to charge my credit card I used last year, but it was denied. They stated I was on an automatic payment plan. I had always paid my insurance in full so there was no plan or payment authorization. Very scary!

My summary - Good Sam/National General Insurance is out of control and can no longer be trusted. The credit score upcharge could possibly be a scam. Their agents are nothing short of being insurance hustlers changing costs, coverage numbers and putting pressure on to make you accept their quotes immediately and never check the fine print. I can only imagine if I had an accident and actually needed to deal with them.

Incidentally, I was finally able to pull a credit report from Experian, and we are golden. Don’t know what is on Transunions report to confirm any info.

Try the Miller Agency we've been with them for a number of years now and for us, at least, they've done well, I've checked. http://millerrvinsurance.com

Not being an insurance expert, I asked my insurance agent whom I have been dealing with for over 25 years and is an avid RV owner also. She recommended going with an insurance company that specializes in RV's. She uses Progressive whom I am getting a quote from right now. My local insurance company that does our home and auto's was only $266 per year, a great price! Problem is if I have even a small claim (awning, kitchen or bath flood, roof issue, etc), all of my policies are affected. For that reason, I'm looking elsewhere.

BREAKING NEWS: Another e-mail quote just showed up, this one for $499. I haven't talked to the phone agent since last week, so it's amazing this is still ongoing. I now have 6 different dollar amounts for the one verbal quote, 6 e-mailed quotes and 2 mailed bills. It's sad but also very amusing.

Had National General for 3 years....kept going up every year. Swapped to Progressive and my premiums dropped to what 1/2 of what NG was and it even included another plus my truck and 5th wheel with full coverage on all. They would not give me a reason why my premiums went up to almost double in 3 years.

Shop around for your insurance. The insurance companies don't seem to reward you as a long term customer much like the cable companies. We just switched to Geico for much better rates.

Through Good Sam I had Natl Gen and rates went up so they switched me to Allied. Allied Stopped writing RV insurance and GS switched me to Progressive.

I have used Progressive for going on 10 years now for both the RV and autos. It has never been my experience that a claim on one policy affects all policies. I would go the other way if an insurance company tried that trick on me.

Sounds like they are badgering you and attempting to confuse you.

I will not go into the ugly details but I will never have insurance with National General again. Mine is insured with Allstate and will stay insured with them. I do not have the complete replacement up to 5 years old but that is a chance I am willing to take after my experience with them

We are farmers so have Farm Bureau and have had a $5,000 claim on our Montana after a wind storm in Texas with no changes to cost or coverage.

How many of you are part timers or weekenders? We are about to go full time and our 5'er will be our ONLY RESIDENCE. Are the insurance costs you are passing along for your 5'er as a SECOND Home or is it insurance costs for your 5'er as your ONLY Home?

Doug and Suzanne,

It varies depending on the insurance company. Geico bases rates on number of use days per year - USAA doesn't. Geico was less expensive for us based on not camping over 60 days a year.

I was a fleet manager for many years with hundreds of vehicles on the road every day. Not one company I would put below Allstate for settling claims. Rear ended by a drunk woman with Allstate and nothing unusual, no medical, just their delay tactics on a $4000 claim.
