Using the 101 from Portland to San Fran?

Is there any problem pulling a 41 foot Monty down the 101? We are doing a circle of the West next summer and would like a more scenic route than I5. I have never driven the West Coast before. Any suggestions on places we should stop and smell the roses?

People have talked about this before and the consensus has always been that it is not a good idea. Last year we went north from Bakersfield to Portland. We stopped to see Yosemite along the way. We took I-5, with the idea of maybe driving over to the coast. That did not happen as the distance to the coast from I-5 was greater than I figured.

I've driven 101 from San Francisco to Gold Beach, Oregon this summer, and have driven that route many times both with a 33 foot motorhome towing car and with our 33 foot Montana. Just spent the summer at Eureka, CA. 101 goes right through town.

For the most part, it is a 4 lane highway although there are a number of 2 lane sections including through the redwoods. Little tight, but very do-able, just take your time and be careful. Big rigs use it all of the time along with many lumber trucks. It's the only access road to the Northern California coast.

IMHO, it would be the best route for you because going down 5 to 505 to 80 would be a much longer ride.

We have done the 101 several times from Washington to the Santa Barbara area in California. No problems. We trend to go inland around Santa Rosa to avoid San Francisco and the bay area. There are a few places that are narrow but very doable. Just a note, your speed will be slow at times if your doing it in the summer. Wife and I love the Oregon coast and have spent several summers there. We like the central and southern part of the coast in Oregon. If you are planning to do some state parks, better make reservations as soon as possible.
Hope this helps.

Hwy-101 from Portland to north of San Francisco is no problem I have towed across twice this summer. You can ytake Hwy-101 all the way to San Francisco with little problems. Do not attempt Hwy-1 however.

I drive up and down the coast all the time no problem pulling my Montana. It’s slower than I5 but much more scenic. Just take your time and watch speed limits.you won’t have a problem.
