hitch conversion
Has anyone converted thier hitch to a gooseneck? if so, which conversion did you go with?
I already have a B&W turnover ball installed on our 3500DRW GMC and would rather not install a fifth wheel hitch that takes up a lot of space in the back of the truck.

Unless you go with the new Reese gooseneck hitch, it will void your frame warranty. If you go with the gooseneck adapter, the trailer will buck something awful. Never put a gooseneck adapter on a MorRyde hitch. We've been told it can pull them apart. We have the B&W turn-over ball and got the Companion fifth-wheel hitch. Love it! Just remove the ball and drop the Companion in. Tighten a bolt and you are good to go. Want your ball back? Loosen the bolt, pull the pin, remove the fifth-wheel hitch and drop the ball back in. Easy peasy.

From all I have read the Reese Goosebox is the only one that will not void the Lippert warranty. It is an air ride pin box with a shock absorber, much like the 5th Airborne air ride pin box.
Would probably still be a good idea to confirm that with Keystone/Lippert if you have a trailer still under warranty.

Do a little comparison before you put that gooseneck on your unit. If you check, the gooseneck frame assembly is a whole lot heavier and beefed up more than your units framework up front. A gooseneck puts a whole lot more stress on the frame than a normal fifth wheel hitch.

Rondo is right. Just look at the steel on a gooseneck trailer and that should answer your question. I have heard about the Reese hitch which is fairly new.

I did a lot of research on it before the Reese hitch came out. Based on that research we made the decision not to do it.

All good Feedback! Thanks to all! I like the looks of the Companion especially since I already have the B&W turnover gooseneck hitch for our LQ horse trailer. I was worried that a fifth wheel hitch wouldn't fit in the frame (rails) with the framework underneath from the B/W hitch. The Companion Hitch answers that possible dilemma.

Our vote goes with the B&W companion too.

I just changed the base on my B&W to the new style. My old 18K base was replaced by the 20K base. Just the base weighs 131 lbs with out the head. You will need some help lifting it into the bed of the truck.
The new base is a new design and is much stronger. A overkill for my 14k trailer for sure.

Don't judge the hitch you need by the weight of your rig. Remember the physics of a collision. In a crash the hitch's job is to protect the folks in the cab (you will already have something trying to come into the cab from the front). A little extra protection at a small extra cost makes sense to me.
