Don't really know much about locking and such, but the info. I got with the MS said it uses 12 Sats. So far it hasn't lost the Sats.

Happy Camping

That means it has 12 parallel channels..There are 24 Satellites orbiting the earth. They circle the earth twice each day in a set orbit. The GPS receiver must get and keep a firm lock on three satellites to get a fix on your position. With a three sat lock you will get Latitude Longitude and movment information(that means you know were you are and which way you are going) With four or more satellites in view and locked you get more information such as Altitude, speed, bearing, track, trip distance, distance to destination and I forget what else..been awhile since I had to know this stuff.. I can step out into my front yard and "see 7 satellities(most of the time) Sreigle has a good unit.. you get what you pay for in GPS units. Before you buy one go to the garman site and read up on how GPS works or go to www.
