Its just chance, you may be healthy and active at age 72 or you may have already passed into the ages before that time. Enjoy each day and plan to live. I hope that we all will be making "footprints on the sands of time" at or above age 72 and will have a "heart for any fate, still achieving still pursuing".

I am 76 and lucky enough to have had good health all my life I agree that health can change overnight so we will continue to enjoy as the fellow says until the old bones tell me it is time to quit Hopefully the same time as my tow vehicle

I planned my retirement at 63 1/2 which was 18 months exactly of COBRA health coverage before Medicare kicked in. Retirement was seamless and I brought totally undue stress upon myself just thinking about it. At the end of the day it is not about how much you make...it is all about how much you actually spend each month.
My wife is 5 years younger and neither of us EVER thought about retiring and, after we both had over 38 years into our careers it just seemed the right thing to do mentally and physically when it happened to both of us at different times.
We feel blessed and pinch ourselves every day. We are enjoying life and family to the fullest and by the way, how much $$$ do you really want to leave to your Kids?

I tease my daughters ~~ "if anything left when I'm gone it is only because my timing is off".

All the kids are well set on their own. My only concern was to make sure my wife was safe if anything should happen to me. That she would be able to maintain a stress free, comfortable life style. But not too comfortable don't want to give her any ideas.

My planning is not geared toward leaving any substantial money to the kids. But at the same time I do not want to run out of money before we pass leaving the kids the burden of paying for our care. I am 72 and DW 70 and both in good health. My parents and most uncles and aunts lived into their late 80's and many into their 90's. DW's mother is 95 and still going. Mine died at 93. That is a lot of years left to finance if either of us make it that long. I would rather leave money on the table than be a financial burden to the kids, or worse yet, fall into the pit of government funded end of life care. But if there is any money left over for the kids and grandkids, that is not bad either.

No reason to make her NEXT too comfy either...

i am 74.5 an DW is 70. We just purchased a new 2018 Montana 3791. have not learned how to travel light yet so I really love that large storage with the sliding tray. We are camp hosts wherever we go. Handling it well and loving it. Still put a few thousand miles a yer on the Harley Ultra Classic that is stored at my daughters house. Hope to do this 10 more years or till the body says stop.

My experience would suggest that you have more than 10 years to enjoy your Montana.

I'm looking for someone past 85 to give me some added encouragement.

I met an 82 year old lady at Thanksgiving traveling with her mother. She was doing fine and had no plans to stop.

As for my two cents regarding the SS thing. In 2/3s of couples at least one will reach age 90. If your significant other is taking advantage of the spousal payments, then some may want to wait longer than age 62 or even their regular retirement age (mine is 66). When the first of the couple passes, the survivor will receive the higher of the two SS payments. If one is on a spousal, then there will be a 1/3 reduction in income. If you have longevity in your family, you are reasonably healthy and you don't absolutely need the money, wait as long as you can to protect the higher survivor's income. From age 66 to age 70 that amount goes up 8% a year. 32% is really close to that third you will lose at the first passing.

We just turned 81 and are slowing down a bit. We have been on the road since 2006.We have covered all of the lower 48 and a couple of Canadian provinces. Our retirement income is good. Our kids are all doing well and do not need or want any of our money. We intend to spend everything we have.

Cool UNLESS you are retired federal Civil Service. At age 66 I finally signed up for full Soc Sec, nearly 5 years ago. With the latest COLA it comes to $159 monthly. Not able to get spousal either. Now if I could get spousal it would be noticeable and would pay more than the water bill at the S&B.

77 and loved our 7000mile adventure to Glacier,YNP,GTNP,and Colorado this fall. Ram Diesel and Montana 305RL High Country make for easy driving. Have to say making the trip home to Alabama from Cody WY in 14 hr day,12 hour day and 12 hour day was too much, will not do that again. Hope to be able to travel for several more years.

Planning a long trip for late this fall - probably another 7-8000 miles at 79 for me, 72 for my DW. We intend to keep on going as long we are physically able since age is only a number of birthdays we have had. We generally use our 5er 85 or so nights a year with a semi permanent site then a short and a long trip, beginning of the camping season and at the end. I do have to admit that 500 mile days are no longer fun, especially with the traffic now wherever we go. So, with that said, we are enjoying the kids inheritance while we can.

No U Hauls at the Cemetary

We're in our mid 70's still moving around and been drawing our SS for 12 years plus. We work in the summers so we can play in the winter. Keeps us healthy. We haven't been to a funeral yet where there was a U haul filled with things accumalted over a lifetime. Sold the house and gave everything to the kids except the money. We're still using that. Just bought us a '18 Montana 3790. The storage allows us to move quicker.

WOW!
My hat is off and much respect for those of you North of 70 and still going strong! Give us youngsters a lot to look forward too! Then again it scares the heck out of me to think I might actually have to make the retirement stretch past 90!
