Lincoln, NH to Bar Harbor, ME

We will be traveling from Lincoln, NH to Bar Harbor, ME during second week in Sept. and would like to know about pulling Monty through White Mountains Hwy 112 and 302 over to ME or should we go back down south to Interstate System?

This is really not an answer to your question [I'm sure someone who really knows will respond] but just a friendly greeting. In June, this year, we took the 302 "cut-off" from I-91 to get up to US 2. We were on our way to Bethel/Hanover, ME where we had a delightful few days with an old friend who lives there. It was a beautiful drive and I'm glad we took that route. It was not the fast route, of course. We were towing our 34' fifth-wheel.

So . . . looks like we were not far from Lincoln, NH. But the part of 302 we know about is not the part you've thinking of.

Good Luck. BTW, we did not go down to Bar Harbor, or to the coast of Maine at all. Though we have been there in the past, it did not fit into our plans for this year.

Spoke with someone not long ago who took a similar (?) route...asked about the ups and downs and twists and turns he had to make. He said they were not a problem; the problem he had was finding places along the way that sold diesel fuel. You may want to do a computer search along your route to ensure you do not run out of fuel! Happy travels.

I don't know about the roads you mentioned but we towed US 2 from around Burlington, VT to Ellsworth, ME, which is practically next door to Bar Harbor (10 or 15 miles). No problem towing at all. None of the mountains are particularly steep on that road. It's beautiful country, though. Enjoy your trip.

Thanks to all, we will ask alot of locals about the drive while in Lincoln and if it appears reasonable then leave early and fill up with diesel before going. Hwy 112 is the Kancamagus Scenic Byway between Lincoln and its intersection with Hwy 302 going through/over the White Mountains.

OK, now I know what road you mean. We drove the Kancanmagus Scenic Byway as part of a day trip but we were not towing. I do not recall anything that would challenge us for trailer towing but I was not particularly looking for that. It's a beautiful drive. Maybe you can also drive it solo so you can stop at the pullouts to look at the scenery, etc. Enjoy the trip.

US-302 between Barre and Groton, VT
Caution sign - steep grade
Total distance of grades 3 miles
1st half mile 8% with 40 mph turns
After that it steps down to 5-6%
About half way down there is another short 8% grade

Kancamagus Pass on NH 112 between Lincoln and Conway
East bound decent toward conway has 7% for 4 miles with 35 mph curves
The 7% grade is steady and lasts about 5 miles
The rest of the trip to Conway is rolling hills and mild grades
NOTE: the West bound lane from Lincoln is 9% for 3.6 miles with a 20 mph hairpin
I don't know what the grade is going into Lincoln from the West

If you stop in Conway, take the Mt. Washington tour. You will not be able to take a 1 ton dually up there, just a "regular" (define regular) pickup. the grade to the top is 12%
They have tours in GMC vans.

Hey, why am I tell you this - you are from Lincoln, NH.

Happy trails.

If anyone else is traveling and needs to know any grades along their route, give me a holler. I have both the East and West Mountains directory. They were worth the purchase price.

Thanks WayneM for the grades. With this info we sure will drive solo before towing. I sure hope the east coast and northeast makes it through Irene ok. Will be in Niagara Falls for Labor Day weekend. Then on to Erie Canal Village before going to VT, NH, and on to ME for Lobster, Acadia, and Whale watching. Any recommendations on sight seeing is appreciated.

I don't know where you are staying in Niagara, but when we visit or travel through that area we stay in Gasport at Niagara Heartland RV Park. It's about 20 miles from Niagara Falls, but if you take the scenic route along Lake Erie it is a tad further. On the express route (NY Roads, and all were good) you can go to Lockport and watc the Locks in operation, and if desired, take a ride on a boat through the locks. Where you get the tickets for the boat there is also a ticket for a tour through an old power company cave. Historic, and long with a little "coal pull train." We had Miya with us, a 70 pound Husky, and they made room for her - like squeezing her big butt in-between people. She's not afraid of anything, except me.

Happy trails.

Oh! Niagara Heartland is a Passport America campground at $15 a night PA Rates, plus $5 a night deposit on electricity. Unused deposit is refunded at the end of the stay.

OK, We will watch the locks work, and might do the ride through the locks at Lockport.

After Acadia, if you are heading South, you might want to stop at Camden and Boothbay Harbor. They are both beautiful areas. Camden has a beautiful harbor and if you like hiking (easy hikes for me) there are some beautiful views with easy hikes. Boothbay Harbor is also a great stop. The Northeast Rally was held there in June and from what I have read, all had a good time, beautiful harbor, shops, boat rides.

Enjoy and be safe....

Garry asked me about things to do in the Conway area. My niece has a cabin in that area and she has prepared this for others traveling to the area. I sent it to Garry, but in case anyone else is traveling here it is for Conway, NH:

I've lived in NH (there now in fact)and 112 is a beautiful drive but I wouldn't take my rig on it. It has lots of grades and turns on grades with switchbacks. It's just me but I try to avoid anything over 7% with my rig. This is probably the one road in NH I would not tow on.

Having said that, it's not a drive to miss, probably the prettiest ride in New England. Find a nearby camp and drive it unhooked.

PS: We're in Ossipee, NH now and headed for Bar Harbor via Moosehead Lake. We'll be taking rte 16 north then rte 2 most of the way. We'll be at Moosehead until the 6th and then Bar Harbor for a week.

Thanks to Waynem for the things to do list and to pbahlin for the road info. I will look at the maps and see how pbahlin's route looks compared to my original intentions. We plan to be in Niagara for Labor Day weekend. We have reservations there, but the remainder of the trip is ride and call ahead. The Villages at Turning Stone RV Park in NY appears good and is near Erie Canal Village. Rest N Nest Campground in East Thetford, VT appears ok, and about 32 miles away is Country Bumpkins Campground in Lincoln NH also appears good. Then on to Bar Harbor Campground or Hadley's Point Campground on or about Sept 10th. Also, if we need to be making reservations please advise, any heads up on any of these CGs or a better camp would be welcome.

We spent the 1st 2 weeks of July at Hadley Point CG. Very nice CG, and the staff was very friendly. We would definitely stay there again. I would make reservations. They do have full hook up sites, but very few, fortunately they have a pump out service which is reasonable. Make sure you check out the shuttle buses, to tour Acadia NP and go into Bar Harbor, (hopefully they will still be running!) They are free and you can get to about anywhere on Mount Desert Island. If you happen to go north from there, check out Sunset Point CG in Lubec, Maine, it is where we are now. Very scenic and you can visit Campobello Island, Roosevelt International Park, if you have your passports. If you go south, Camden Hills state park in Camden, Maine is great, and they can accommodate large rigs. The lobster pounds are good places to get fresh lobsters, either cooked or live, check their prices, they can vary quite a bit. "Two Cats" restaurant is great for breakfast in Bar Harbor.

You will like Turning Stone. Don't forget to "bring money" as the Casino is just up the road.

Some advice on getting there. The GPS will not get you to the campground, only to the Casino. If you pull in there you will need a place to turn around, which should be easy. However, as you are proceeding down the road to the campground the Casino will be on your left. (if you are going that way. (lol)) The RV park is about 1/2 mile further down the road on the right side. It is a nice CG. When you check in you will get all kinds of information, and the phone number for the Shuttle to take you to the Casino.

If you win any money, some of it is ours that we "lost" there. Also, if you want a more scenic ride, take US-2 across, but that would put you away from Turning Stone, I think. Jump up to Watertown, then across the Adirondacks. Little Wolf CG in Tupper Lake is nice and quiet. Also, a friend just stayed in Lake Placid at the KOA and said it was beautiful.

Happy trails.

If you have Passport America, check out Narrows Too. It's right at the neck going out to Arcadia. Expensive without PPA but very nice (we are told by locals). We're headed there on the 6th for three nights. We were also told that everybody bailed out for Irene and the placed has plenty of slots for drop ins.

We're trying Saltwater Farm in Thomaston (very close to Camden) after Bar Harbor. Also PPA place. Also expensive without it.

BTW: if you're not PPA you can join on line and get a PPA member # instantly. Those two places alone will more than cover your membership cost ($44) if you stay for a while.
