You need to be aware of something before shelling out money for LED's. LED light is very directional. That means if you are putting them in a lamp that utilizes a reflector, they won't work well at all. That also applies for use in lamps that rely on a bulb providing near 360 degree light. There are LED's made for this type of lighting but they are quite expensive. Quartz/halogen bulbs provide brighter light but have two trade offs: they heat up much more, and draw more current.

Be careful handling quartz/halogen bulbs too. Use a clean cloth or similar when handling them. Even with clean hands any amount of natural oil on your fingers can heat so much and cause the bulbs to fail because of how hot they get.
In illipah's link look at the automotive section for comparable vehicle and RV lamps which should help with what Tom S. describes.

I use them in my kitchen area, for now. You have to get use to the blue white color (super white). I think there are someother colors.

When in Quartzsite last Jan. we thought we would give LED's a try so bought a set of them to replace one of the 921 bayonet style bulbs over the kitchen counter. It was quite expensive $15 or 16 and we just didn't care for the colore of the light but since we paid so much for it we were gonna use it. Well it lasted about 6 months. So much for our led experiment, I think we'll stick with the el cheapos, even if they do draw more juice

A number of people have had luck with products from this LED vendor. Check with Dave Anderson, who got some of the more expensive, shorter life LEDs (in Quartzsite, I think), and then some from this vendor. Last I heard, he was happy with them, and I hope that's still the case. Check with Robbie Simons, too.
There are at least two color ranges that are available, warm and cool. Warm towards the red end of the spectrum, and cool towards the blue. The newer LEDs do a better job of balancing the color to keep it from being too blue, and sometimes the cooler color gets you brighter light.

My experience was the same as Charlie's. I bought 8 LEDs at Quartzsite for $18 each. Five were dead with in the first 6 months. I don't understand why the out three are still working after 10 months.
After talking with Dave Anderson at Seven Feathers I bought 3 replacement LEDs at http://superbrightleds.com/ so far they are working fine.

I wonder if the voltage fluctuations have anything to do with the LED life. I use some in my truck and have had no issues with them, but the truck has two batteries that are always well charged, or the engine is running, whereas if you are using them in a trailer the voltage changes due to a number of things.
If I paid $8 and they only lasted 6 months, I'd be a bit miffed.

Just think how upset you would be then when you paid $16-18 and they failed after 6 months

I got mine online 2 for $12.00, had to change the ends myself, Still working after 10 months. And I'll be mad if I get less than a few years out of them.

Yeah, I got too busy with my fingers when I typed that - it was supposed to be $18 but I missed the 1. Spell check doesn't check against stupid!

Bothe Grant & bob are right!!! the problem with a lot of cheaper, and not so cheap, led's that are floating around ,is,they dont have resistors to keep the voltage at 12 volts. on those earlier led's If you were on shorepower your batt.s may be chargeing to 13.5 or more and they would "blow" the LED's They lasted well when boondocking at Quartzsite, then when we went to an RV park-----BAM!!! It REALLY hurt toblow one of those $39.00 towers for the bedroom lights. Superbrightleds.com has resistor in all of thier products and they have some dandy replacements for your lights. See me in Quartzsite I'll show you what I've found................Dave

I have replaced all my light bulbs with LEDS. We have replaced all the lights in the kitchen and living room with warm (3200kv) and all the bedroom light with cool white(6000kv). We purchased these from WWW.SUPERBRIGHTLEDS.COM. Also have replaced the 110v light bar above the bathroom sink with 1.5watt LED's from Wall-Mart for $5 each. The warm leds are just about the same color as the original bulbs and more pleasing to the eye. So far all the bulbs work well and have not failed. Looking forward to fully test them at Q in Jan.

I don't think you'll find any that weren't made off shore.

I can get a box of 921 bulbs for $3 in Quartzsite, I think I'll just stick with them.

For information from SuperBrightLED on converting auto incandescent lights to LEDs, go to
Conversion Notes
and for a cross reference to Superbrightled's part numbers, go to
Cross Reference
Their website has a lot of information about color temperature, selection criteria, intensity, viewing angle, and techniques to prevent premature failure.

Thanks Bob, Dave, et al.
We are now ready to try LEDs in our rig. We just had our first boondocking experience last week in the new rig. The new battery monitor from AM solar made us aware how much energy the 12V and AC fixtures consume!

Surprising, isn't it, how much power things consume? I'll have both a dc and ac current meter down in Q, so we can measure all sorts of things like charging current and current usage of all the appliances. That ought to make a nice addition to our Montana information package.
