6.0 Ford turbo boot

I have had several occasions where the top turbo boot comes off with a load roar. When this happens it scares the heck out of you & you loose power. Two times I have had new boots at a Ford dealer installed and then have them pop off again. I have found if you install a new boot, warm up the engine and get the boot hot, then tighten it again until you think the clamp is about to break. I now carry 2 spare clamps and a 7/16 open end ratchet in the glove box.

I have a 6.4 and have had the turbo hoses come off. With 40 + pounds of boost it sounds like a shotgun went off under the hood. You will need clean shorts. If you really won't to fix the problem get you some good aftermarket hoses and where possible double clamp them. Rudy's Diesel Performance and others I'm sure has every thing you need. I almost always carry an extra set of hoses and clamps with my camper. I say almost because the time I needed them I didn't have them with me. I was 65 miles from the nearest Ford dealer almost to the top of Bolder Hill on I 15 in Montana when boom. My wife said what was that and in said turbo hose no problem I'll have this fixed in 10 minutes. There was a problem my turbo hoses were in my camper shed. $300 dollars and 4 hours later we had it fixed.

Apparently not an uncommon problem. But I had an '07 F350 6.0 traded at about 77,000 and never had the problem. And that was pulling Colorado mountain passes several times over the years with the boost moving up the dial pretty far.

If it happens again, you might try over on the Ford Truck Enthusiasts forum to see if someone there has a good solution. Very active Ford truck owner forum.

Never experienced, 15 years with ford diesels. Knock on wood, I guess.

The solution is turbo hoses. The original equipment hoses are silicone rubber. When the get oil on them they get slick and won't stay on. The aftermarket ones are made of a different much thicker rubber. With a 350 HP tune these hoses will see boost pressure of 52 PSI which is much higher than stock and they stay on.

When I had my '06 6.0 bulletproofed (or it could have been when I was back for new injectors) they did not put the blue silicone boot back on, instead it looked like a black radiator hose. Eventually it seemed to become saturated with oil and the entire area around it was an oily mess, very disappointing because my engine compartment was always very clean. But never has it blown off.
However, when pulling on the grades, I did discover the 2 speed fan clutch combined with the idler pulley bearing was a new noise that made my heart go up into my throat. But that's another topic.

I blew a hose on a 03 6L that was stock. They were put on with radiator hose clamps. Ford didn't have a fix so having a machine shop I made hose clamps. When I finished you would have pulled hoses into before one came off.

Interesting discussion. Our '06 6.0 is three and a half years old to us and we've put half it's mileage on it - 58k total. I've heard of the hose problem off and on and had thought about picking up a replacement one just in case something happened. I'm not worried because of mileage, but because of age. The existing one is black, and not blue. Also, have never gotten over 30 - 35 psi, and that was only once.

I'm pretty sure if your hoses are black they are aftermarket. I have never seen a black OEM hose on a ford.

I have recently discovered that in 06 ford specs two different size hoses, one shorter than the other. I don't know the cutoff date but its an early-later model deal. Also my truck (later model) does fine with the after market that's on it. My sons truck (earlier model) wont hold an after market. The only difference we can see is OEM has a grove molded into the rubber hose designed to mate with a ridge cast into the CAC tube and turbo outlet

There are two hoses, one upper and one lower.

We were on our way to Reno, when all of sudden Ka-boom. Sounded like an explosion under the hood. Told my wife not to worry tooooooooooooo much. Checked and saw the air intake hose popped off. Slipped it back, tightened the hose clamp and started off again, when Blam, it did it again. So, I tried again, feeling I wasn't getting enough torque because I forgot to bring a long extension, and blam popped again. Called AAA and the driver came out, told him what the problem was, and fortunately had an extension. He said this was a common problem on the grade. He followed us to the top, to fill out the paper work. Asked him to check and retighten all the hose clamps before leaving, to make sure. He did, and first thing I did was go to the auto parts store and get that extension, lol. No problems since.

The two sizes and styles I speak of are both upper hoses. We held one up to the other for comparison. It was the Ford parts Dept. that explained the Early/Late model parts break.

I had a 6.0 on an 03 F-250 and ripped a hose. I bought after market and the replacements (both) from Ford and after market parts were over 1/2" shorter. This is part of the problem. The other issue is not a large enough ridge on the pipes.

Solution for me was to use a very strong solvent cleaner on the turbo pipe (I blew the upper turbo hose) and pipe and make sure the new hose was really clean. (Get the oil cleaned out) Work the pipe and hoses together and position and tighten clamps. Make sure to get max insertion on the hose. The pipes and hoses must be clean and dry.

Fortunately the new 6.7 does not have this issue - but good luck, get them cleaned and tight and you should not have any more issues!

How much boost to the 6.7s run?
It is very important to clean the hoses and pipes before installing the hoses. The hoses can work then out from under the clamp and leave the clamp on the pipe. A 6.4 running a 350 horse chip can get up to over 50 pounds of boost. That will be over 750 HP at the fly wheel. That is serious horse power. Not meant to pull your camper.
