Black Tank Over-fill came out Roof Vent

Anyone ever overfill the black tank when flushing and have water come out the vent from the roof? I saw this today at the RV park where were are spending the night and wondered what the ......!

It was a Montana - I thought an overfill would flood the inside or basement first?

Haven’t done it but have heard of it. If all pipe connections are tight the only place for water to go is up thru the toilet or up the vent. But if the toilet valve is closed that leaves only the vent. Hope they didn’t step on the toilet flush while the tank was still overfilled.

I find it very hard to believe someone would start flushing there black tank and completely forget that they are doing that, but who knows.

The way I see it, is that that person connected the fresh water hose to the black tank flush port my mistake, turned the water on and paid no attention afterwards until it started raining poo off the roof. YOU MUST PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOU ARE DOING!!!!

Now that is a good reason to wash the roof. I usually don’t think there is any need to wash the roof but I will make an exception for this.

We have seen that done a number of years ago. The dog got loose or some emergency and he forgot all about what he was doing.

If nothing else, this proves that their black tank system is tight. At least it didn't leak inside.

Believe it! I can point you to a MOC member who did it. not once, but twice. And there is rumors about others here who have done the same.

I am embarrassed to say I got distracted and let the tank fill up - no overflow up the pipe tho. It broke the tank by the inlet pipe and the tank body - as many have had happen. Although I didn't realize it at the time.
I have had 2 tanks go bad in 14 years and 110,000 miles and only one was my fault! lol

Black tank

Last year I too got distracted and let the thing go couple of days too long and it got really full - but it happened when I had a SRW truck. It has not happened since I have had the dully. Is there a connection? I don't know - I'm just saying the SRW truck was the difference.

If I had to guess, I would say those that have had this happen have done it by flushing at there site and not at a dump station. At a dump station you are there for one reason only, to dump.

Believe it or not, we have only hooked up to sewer one time in 15 years. We have been on sites that have sewer several times, but will not connect unless its over a weeks stay. That combination has only happened once. Most of the places we go or have gone do not have sewer hook ups.

A service manager once told me that during the black tank flush, it takes approx. 16 minutes to overfill the tank and have it start raining poo.

He timed the whole thing using a clean tank and fresh water. Not sure why he would purposely do that.

Bottom line, don't get distracted.

Got distracted and had to go inside for a "honey-do" while flushing. all of a sudden it sounded and felt like we had been rammed into on the front end....naw, just busted the tank! luckily I had already done a good job of flushing and only saw mostly clean water seep out from underbelly. It can happen to the "best" of us, and it's not really hard either. Just glad it happened after I had flushed it clean!

That’s why they tell you not to close the valve when flushing. To prevent just that. You have to stay at the camper when flushing. Especially if your like me and close the valve to build up some water to flush the bottom of the tank. Otherwise it don’t flush good enough.

Prime reason why I don’t and never have used the built in tank flush. I use a clear plastic Valtera with separate gate valve and hose connection...tank is always clean, I can see when it’s clean, and there is no worry of a closed black tank valve or a busted and leaking anti siphon valve. YMMV

I still think it would be nice to put the the drain hole in the bottom of the tank. Not in the side wall an inch above the bottom.

That’s like putting the drain hole for your sink on the side an inch up on the wall?????

Just saying is all.

Oh and don’t tell me there is not enough room underneath the tank, there is.

I agree they should drain from the bottom, however on my unit and many others with the drop down front frame, the bottom of the tanks are literally un against the coroplast covering. That would put the valve and drain lines in an unheated position.

I do the same thing when flushing the black tank. I set my alarm because it is easy to get distracted. Fellow campers come up and visit. I don't have a problem when I set the alarm.

SRW trucks are known to have that abnormality. You have set the emergency brake and place it in tow/haul mode to prevent it when flushing the RV black tank. Last guy I saw that happen to had to have the entire differential replaced on his truck.

If you read the directions, you are not supposed to run water into the black tank with the output valve closed. I am amazed that it didn't blow the top off the black tank. The black tank in my Montana is just a large tub approx 6' long by 3' wide and about 12" deep. It has a 2" flange around the top with a flat piece of a plastic type material glued/welded to the top of the flange. I know this because mine started leaking when the top came loose. Luckily I had extended warranty that covered it. If you calculate the need Myers of sq. In. In an area the size of the cover and apply 30 or 40 psi of water pressure you can see why they were lucky it didn't ruin the tank.
