Heater Ducts

Anyone have the heater ducts come off of the back of the heater? Our 2008 3485SA seems to have this issue. The vent in the rear between the rockers gives off little or no air, the next on forward at the kitchen counter blows lots of air, the next one forward blows little or no air, the bathroom and bedroom vents blow a little air. I'm thinking some of the ducts came unhooked.

The most likely place to look is at the heater. There are attachments to the duct round. If there are any leaks they should be visible.

When we got our 2007 I took the panel off that separates the basement and the heater unit only to find that most of the heater ducts were barely connecter to the heater and most of the air flow was going into the heater bay. I rerouted the cords and heater ducts so the air flow was straighter through the ducts and then took duct tape and secured the ducts to the heater. Much better air flow to the heat ducts inside the trailer.

The one in the John room of our 13 3402 was never connected. It is wise to remove the rear panel covering in the compartments to see what the skilled craftsmen forgot to hook up and tie wrap things up.

Since you refer to the "main" area registers, one thing to look at is the duct in the floor. On both our 3400's and now the 3725, I've removed all the registers, laid a flashlight in the duct, and used a mirror to look down the duct. You'd be surprised (well, probably not) at how much debris and sawdust is left in them. Also, what I found in some cases was the cutout for the register was not done right, and either a piece of the metal or a piece of carpet was left hanging down into the duct, which partially blocked the airflow. For cleaing the duct, I used the on board vacuum, and just poked the hose down the duct to suck up the debris, then checked again with the flashlight/mirror as mentioned before. And, as others have said, also check the furnace outlets themselves, as they may have come loose, or even have a hole in them. They are thin and cheap.

The problem you are describing is the ducting in the floor, it is my understanding that the furnace heat chamber sits on top of that ducting, it is then routed from the heater down the middle of the floor. The connection that thekennys showed in their picture is the duct to the bedroom duct, not the floor ducting. My 3402RL looked the same and was not connected properly, it is a twist in fitting and should be taped, mine was not twisted into the opening properly.
There should be a smaller one that goes to the bathroom and one just going into the belly to supply heat to that area.

I did a couple of mods on mine including reducing the air flow to the bedroom and putting a register next to the shower so that when the pocket doors were closed it got warm there when showering, a wonderful difference on a cold morning. The added register receives it's air from the same duct as the bedroom register, so there was no reduction of overall air flow.

Using a mirror is sometimes the only way to look down the floor duct, there may be a piece of flooring or something partially blocking it, nothing would surprise me. It will likely not be a straight run from the furnace depending on where the furnace sits as in my 3402.

Mike, Thanks for the photo. I'mm thinking that (or something very similar) is my problem as when we first used the trailer all worked fine. I vacuum the debris out of the registers when I see it so some air is getting through.

On our 2007 3400RL it was the panel right behind the convenience center where the city water come into the rig.

Ours is also just aft of the convenience center. Checked it yesterday and found there are only two ducts from the heater to the rest of the trailer. One, a 4" goes from the plentum to the rectangle rigid duct that runs the length of the trailer. That hook up consisted of a couple feet of the cheapest tin foil dryer ducting. I replaced it with galvanized ducting and an adjustable elbow, then insulated it with spun fiberglass. Checked it and found lots of air now in the bedroom and bathroom. Didn't have time to run the slides out and check the living room registers but am confident they are receiving more air flow.

The second was the same cheap tin foil only about 2". Not able to see where it goes as it disappears behind the wall I can't remove. Plan to check into that further when we go camping and have the basement pretty much cleared out.
