Supplemental prescription coverage

I was wondering what type of supplemental prescription coverage any one has? Come May first, my coverage will change and we have to pay 45% for name brand drugs. Karen takes a couple of meds that have no generic. We figured out the cost last night and were shocked to say the least. I am looking at AARP's supplemental insurance. Any suggestions?

Kicking and screaming, we signed up for the AARP's version of the Medicare prescription coverage. If you don't sign up now, assuming that you are eligible, it will only cost you more. It is a bit of a shocker to discover how much medications and suppliments cost to maintain good health. The problem is that, as I understand it, you can't have additional coverage along with the Medicare Prescription Plan. MCPP and other plans are mutually exclusive.

You may be asking a different question than I am addressing. Maybe you are seeking a suppliment to your existing plan. I don't know where or if you will find that type coverage.

If you're a veteran you can get them through the VA for $8.00, that's where I get mine. Anyone with a Honorable discharge is eligible.

c5racer, does it count if you spent 7 years in the reserves? Not active duty but just the reserves...

Here's a site that will answer your questions...
VA Health Care Eligibility

The fee for prescriptions is based on your ability to pay.
For instance I only have my Social Security and I pay nothing. Currently I am taking Metformin, Niacin, Crestor, Citalopram Hydrobromidec and Lisinopril. All at a cost this year of of $00.00. Because I did work this year next year I may or may not be paying $8 or $9 per month per prescription. THAT'S $8 or $9 regardless of how cheap or expensive the meds are.

I pay nothing for doctors visits, x-rays, blood work, physicals, etc. Even the Colonoscopys were free.

I strongly suggest that ALL VETS sign up for these benefits.

Thank you, Glenn, for the link. After reading it, my 179 days of active duty plus 7-1/2 years active reserves do not qualify me for these benefits. There are special circumstances, but by and large unless one serves 24 contiguous months or is a reservist called to active duty by executive order, there are no VA health benefits. I am very glad you are eligible.

Stiles,
We had several friends who signed up for Humana after checking with many different plans.
They had a booth in Walmart stores and may still have.
Knowing these friends it had to be cheaper than the rest for them to buy.
One of them takes a medication which costs $3000/ mo and Humana covers it minus the deductable.

Some of the VA benefits have changed thanks to revisions by our dear government. Bob applied and was told he should be able to get it only to find out the qualifications have been revised and he didn't qualify. These changes were just in the last couple of years (since our boys went to Iraq). I am sure that more things will change as more and more injured GI's come home.
