I think you can see the pan hard bar in these photos. It was just too difficult to go any farther forward. I have 3ft between the cab and where the 5th wheel will clear. So I could have moved the hitch 3ft forward if stuff was not in the way. Also volvos are a little different than the freightliner. Peterbilt and kenworth are again different. So planning in advance is crucial if you have a specific plan in mind.

And for reference, it would be like a Ford F450 bumper pulling an 8000 lb trailer. You would not know it's back there.

Thank you for the response. Even at my age when I see something, I ask. Still learning.

Okay 2 stupid questions .

The pin over the rear axle in pickup land is all about being able to carry the weight (to not overload the rear axle). In HDT land a well setup truck will have plenty of capacity on the rear and will not need to worry about having a rearward pin location. (on my last HDT the pin was 40inches rear of the axle center line)
From a driving dynamics perspective having the pin rear of the rear axle causes the trailer to track tighter to the truck and respond more quickly when backing up. Effectively, its all better with a rearward pin location for a 5th as long as the truck can handle the load.

I built the flat bed. Now I have all the parts coming to build a drom box 3 ft deep 7 wide and 84 high. That will match the height of the truck. Going to put swing doors on the drom box so that I can put our bikes in there. Nothing like trying to hide 2 $5,000 mountain bikes. This way they are out of sight. Also need a place for the golf clubs.

Oldharley, are you going to use an air ride hitch or pinbox? I would be concerned that with a pin weight of less than 4,000 on a suspension designed to carry 20,000 lbs you will beat the snot out of your trailer.
