Fuel Filters
How often do you change your fuel filters?
I had the dealer change mine yesterday at 41000.
This is longer than the book says but it wasn't in too bad a shape.
Do you keep spares with you for emergencies?
What other spares do you carry?

I change ours every 20,000 miles. If I've run into some dirty fuel, I change in 15,000 miles. I carry a spare with me at all times because dirty fuel can occur at any time.

This may be overkill, but I change mine every 2nd or 3rd oil change depending on how many miles I have put on. If I'm going across country like I drove up to NE, before I started back I changed the BOTH. I change the filter and the separator at the same time. (F350 6.0L)

Last fall I had a fuel filter with just over 10,000 miles fail. Not from dirty fuel but the filter some how collapsed. No one understood how it happened but it did happen. From now on I change the fuel filter whenever I change the oil which is every 10,000 miles. Just yesterday I had the oil and filter changed at the 60,000 mile interval. I always use the AC/Delco filters from the GM dealership. The filter cost was $55.80 installed. That I can live with rather than sitting along some hiway waiting for Good Sam ERS as I had to do that fall day.

Like the oil change information, the DIC will tell you when to change the fuel filter. Works out to around 15,000 miles. BTW, I carry one with me when travelling like some of the others.

I think my book says 25000, done that so far, but do carry a spare one at all times.
Was with a friend resently who thought he had a bad injector or two, limped home, 600 miles to find out it was his filter. I had been with him and he assured me it was the injector so we didn't try the filter, big mistake.

I just changed mine last weekend. It took a whole 5 minutes. I will now be changing it about every 10,000 miles.

I used to pay the big bucks until I read how easy it was to do it myself. I just changed it last month and will every 12,000 miles. I don't carry a spare as they are readily available and I wouldn't know if the filter was causing my problem anyway.

My dealer and the Dodge book says every other oil change.
I try to change about 5000 miles or so so the 10-12000 would be about right.
It's not hard to change. I had my dealer show me.
I'll carry a spare with me now.

Wow TLightning, your Chevy DIC tells you when to change the fuel filter - the only indicator we get in our older model Chevy is it quits running...
We have had one plug up at about 27,000. We now change at 20,000 mile intervals. Have done it myself, but not an easy job on the Chevy. We also try to avoid getting fuel from stations that have above ground tanks or that have recently got a tanker load of fuel.
We always carry a spare fuel filter, spare tire, a few light bulbs and spare change. Carried a spare air filter on our trip to AK.

I change mine at every oil change, approx. 5000 to 8000 miles. Might be over kill but I am sure it will not hurt anything to do it more often. I always carry a spare filter too. I buy my filters from Geno's Garage on line, www.GenosGarage.com $14.95 and they are good filters too. Never had one problem in 10 years of using them. I also use thier oil filters and fan belts too. Best prices I have found anywhere!

I don't know when GM added the fuel filter to the DIC, but our 04 doesn't have it. Seems I read when they added it, they could go back and reflash the ECM for the fuel filter minder on some earlier models. I merely change mind every 15,000 miles or so. It coincides with my oil changes that way.

I changed the Oil and filter and fuel filter between 10,000 to 12,000 miles, and change the Allison filter every 5,000. I just today had all the filters changed and the oil, and it cost $20.00 for the Labor and I furnished the Oil and filters. For us who have GM Trucks the fuel filter isn't easy to change, GM should know better. You can get a bad load of fuel at anytime. The filter should be located in a much better location. Dodge has a much better location. I have complained about this many times since I went to Diesel and our last 5 have been Diesle and hard to change, the Chevy 4500 was in a little better location. I also always carry a extra filter. And I always in the past changed my own oil, but I now don't have to dispose of the oil. Dealerships charge entirely to much money, to get this service done. GBY....

I changed my last fuel filter when the DIC said I had 22% of life remaining...after doing the numbers, it worked out to 14,818 since the last change. So I figure they mean for them to be changed at around 15,000.

Tom, I was thinking the filter minder worked on differential pressure across the filter. Should it not vary quite a bit by the cleanliness of the diesel? IIRC, the desired mileage to change the filter according to GM is around 15K miles though. Guess that would mean the fuel you've been running is up to par then.
