Ladder

I have some problems with my rear ladder. The support posts do not seem able to hold up for very long. One of the two at the bottom has broken off near the trailer wall. I have heard something like $800 to replace the ladder. Is that right? And what is up with the construction? If that piece is separate, why can't it be replaced and not the whole ladder? Any thoughts on where I might find a ladder at a lesser price?

You can buy the whole ladder for under $200, so I'm not sure where the $800 figure came from. But it seems to me someone posted that if you contact the ladder company, they will sell parts. You might try searching.

Thanks, Tom. I'll look into it. The jacked up price may be the labor...

I have purchased parts for my ladder here: http://www.factoryrvsurplus.com/cate...ategory_id=155. They have all of the piece parts needed to repair the ladder.

WOW! This is exactly what I need! It is one of the "stand offs" that is broken. (I didn't even know it was CALLED a stand off until I hit this site!) Now back to the rig to measure, and to figure out how these things are attached. Many thanks!!

If I recall, on our ladder there is a long bolt going horizontally through the upright and then through the standoff into a threaded receiver in the coach. It's been awhile but I think that's correct. The standoff on ours is more or less a hollow tube, window dressing for spacing and covering the bolt.

Next question: how are the foot pads secured to the body of the Monte? One source suggests they are riveted on. If so, I could drill then out, but would I use something like "pop rivets" to refasten? Has anyone else out there done that?

Rivnuts would be much better to attach the ladder foot to the rear cap. This will give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

I am sorry I cannot remember how that anchor is attached but I don't think it's pop rivets. It has been about 10 years since I had to repair ours on our 2001 2880RL but it comes to mind that the receiver is solidly mounted inside the rear cap. I sure could be wrong about that, though.

Since you mentioned yours broke off near the cap, I'd bet the long bolt broke. In that case, an appropriate strength and length bolt would fix that problem.

Also keep in mind that my information is from a 2001 model and ladder attaching technology may have changed in the interim. Maybe someone has more recent information.

I'd suggest if yours has the screw head in the vertical post going into the horizontal piece, like mine did, that you just unscrew that bolt, then drop down the horizontal piece and see what's there.

If I recall, on this Montana I drilled a couple of small drain holes in the bottom of the horizontal posts. Those things tend to collect water and that could rust and weaken those bolts.

Thanks, Steve. I believe the bolt is indeed what went south here. But to replace it the base bracket has to be removed from the cap, and I know it is not just a simple screw on job. The rivnuts idea may be just the thing. We'll see when I get back tot the rig in a few days.

The bolt in ours was bent because I had bicycles attached to the ladder and caught them on a dip in a gas station exit. I just unscrewed the bolt and it came right out, although it was a bit challenging because of the bend in the bolt. The receiving threaded part stayed in the cap and did not move. Yours should just unscrew the same way and then you could work out the horizontal piece and then maybe use vice grips to unscrew the other part of the bolt. Or if it's broken off right at the cap, a screw extractor ought to do it. Again, though, ours was a 2001 model and the world has changed a lot since then.

Broken ladder

The left vertical pole on my rear ladder is broken in two. It’s right under one of the steps and where the post bends slightly. Anyone know if there is a fix or do I need and entirely new ladder? I thought I could insert a piece of pvc inside but the bend makes that impossible. Appreciate any suggestions.

I'm curious, do you normally hang anything on the ladder? I hang an 8' stepladder on my ladder, but worry about it causing damage.
