What States Allow Passengers in FW?

When we bought our 2955RLS the dealer told us you could travel w/ passengers in the RV as long as you had open communication - ie Walkie talkies. He did not know about other states.

Does anyone know if this is allowed in other states or where I could find out? We have 4 people traveling from NY to TN for a car race. Max of 3 can fit in the truck.

I'm kinda interested in the responses this post gets. My daughter wants to ride in the 5th wheel if and when we go to New Mexico. I say NO WAY. I would think it would be illegal.

Well, 5ers do ride better than TT's, but, I can tell you from my experience of riding around the campground, at about 5 MPH, to the dump in the ole TT that there is NO way you are gonna get me to ride in a 5er down the highway at 55 to 70 MPH! NOWAY!

There are people that do it, this ole gal ain't gonna be one of them, nor my kids, grandkids or yorks!

Besides, how comfy can it be with all those slides in the travel position.

That is my take on it, right or wrong, sorry if I offended anyone with my strong stand on this issue.

TL Directory lists each state's RV regulations, including which ones allow passengers. I was under the impression that it was totally illegal, but not everywhere. I agree with Carol - you wouldn't find me riding back there, nor any members of my family, including 4 legged!

California allows it with the communication regulation. The only place I would want to do it would be laying on the bed (in all but the FL). We've talked about it if one of us were really sick. However, now that we have a crew cab, I think the back seat of the TV might be better.

I did this one time for 17 miles while moving to a different park and let me tell you it was the SPOOKEST ride I have ever been on. I did this because I did not want to tear down the computer, everything moves and rattles and when a 18 wheeler passed I thought I would die.Good luck if you do this.LOL

In the meantime, I'm printing your comment to show DH and friends (it's a guys trip to Nascar). Hopefully they'll consider taking a 2nd vehicle!

Let me tell you, it creeks and moans (or at least our TT did), at 5 MPH, scared the willies out of me. That is why my computer does NOT ride in Montana, I am too paranoid about my data, etc. Those that know me, will laugh and chuckle and say, yep, that is Carol for ya!

Jan,

One of the guys at work said they drove for around 350 miles with passengers in the fifth wheel. When they arrived at their destination, all of the passengers were sick and had splitting head aches. He thinks they were probably poisoned with carbon monoxide from the tuck’s exhaust. Be very careful if you decide to do this.

I would suggest you put them in the trailer and just drive down a road with a few turns and some bumps for a few miles. After such a ride I doubt they will want to go from NY to TN back there. They may have some idea it's like riding in a Motor Home, well let me tell ya it ain't even close.

Our idea was the bed would be the most stable because it is close to the hitch and king pin. So tell the guys they have to lay on the bed - that should change their mind pretty quick! LOL

If you ever saw a what was left of an RV after a highway crash you would not even consider putting anybody back there to ride!

I crashed a TT on the highway a few years back. Alot of things appeared to be flying around back there. If anyone had been riding back there they would have been flying around too. No-one will be riding in the back of our rig.

Many states allow it..Everyone should ride back there one time because it will be the ride of your life.Been there ..done that and do not understand how anything in the camper holds together..Wonder how the ride would be with the new Mor_Ryde suspension..Will have to let Helen go back there and report////

Why in the world would anyone want to? My wife, Marge, doesn't even want to be inside when I back the truck up and hook up. As someone else said, it's way too dangerous. There are too many nuts on the highway that can cause RVers a lot of problems.
