verizon lowers overage charge and tethering cost
Verizon put out a press release today lowering their overage charge for mobile broadband service from $0.25/MB to just $0.05/MB -- which ties them with Sprint for lowest overage charge.
They also increased the allowance for their lowest priced monthly plan from 50MB to a (still measley) 250MB.
(I still don't think many RVers can get away with that lower allowance)
Lastly, verizon lowered the "data feature" that allows tethering cell phones and PDAs. The new rate is $49.99/mo (and should still be pro-rated)

Thanks for that information Alex. I usually tether rather than a monthly plan and it was pro-rated from the 59.99 a month which was good for our particular usage. So with 49.99 it will be even better to tether. We have broadband at our home and do not require a monthly/2 year type plan at this time.

Alex,
I use VerizonWireless tethering and indeed it is $49.99 a month for up to 5GB's and $59.99 Unlimited. I like the tethering process because there are no contract periods and if I use it for 15 of 30 days per month I only pay for 15/30th's of $49.99 a month. It's great for Montana folks that have Broadband at their stick homes and inexpensive too. Tks.

like all carriers, ATT has data devices that are free after rebate on 2yr contract.
FYI: at $480 per GB, AT&T has the worst overage charges: http://tinyurl.com/ATT-overage
and the worst coverage of actual high speed mobile broadband: http://tinyurl.com/ATTvsVerizon
its best you make sure that there really will be ATT high speed service where you hope it is by asking existing ATT users and NOT by asking ATT
i doubt you, or any other RVer, want to be paying $60/mo plus $480/GB overage, and end up getting only their slow EDGE service where you travel.

Wendy, I have an Alltel aircard. $59.99/mo and I THINK still unlimited? Trying to remember if I heard something about starting an overage, though... Alex would know.
Alex, could you please explain "tethering" to me? I have the Moto VE-20 (Vegas) with Alltel. I do not have a smart phone or PDA, but would like one, only the I thought the cost would be prohibitive?

the best information on tethering for Verizon and Sprint is at:
http://www.EVDOinfo.com/tethering
for part-timers, tethering is the most cost effective mobile broadband solution.

Dennis -
Am I understanding correctly that at $49.99/month you only pay for the days you utilize the feature? I would at most use it about 8 days a month.

You would need to call Verizon and have them turn on/activate the "tethering feature" a.k.a. the "phone-as-modem feature" before using it, then call them again to turn it off to get the pro-rating.
