Nuvi Map Updates?

My Nuvi 350 just started popping up with a screen that says the North American Streets NT V7.0 are a year old and I should update. However, Garmins webpage says the preloaded devices are not upgradeable to V8.0.

Am I misunderstanding that? Am I doomed with old maps?

Hey Brad...

Hmmm...mine is older than that and I've had no such message with mine. For a while when the Nuvi was newer, I was following a forum called gpspassion - they had all the latest info on the good, bad, and ugly of the Nuvi...as in some updates that would wipe out all your saved info.
Those same folks were talking about having to buy software upgrades to the newer versions which is what I believe you are talking about.

If there is no way to update I would be very surprised as there sure used to be - it was 150 bucks as I recall.

Thanks Bruce - I'll have to keep checking. I know our 350s were one of the first models that came pre-loaded which made it nice.

Hey thanks Ozzie!

Looks like the updates are by DVD, and have not been deliverable yet. Also sounds like it's a little complicated to get updated.

$139 looks like Ozzie - but I would wait a bit. It still looks like they may do an online update for the preloaded devices. Just a matter of when and how much.

Reading a bit further, I found an install guide for the update.
Also a possibility is the local Best Buy to get it right away from the sounds of it.

I just ordered one which is supposed to be delivered tomorrow - it'll be interesting to see if it really has the new maps already loaded.

I called Garmin and mildly complained that my new Nuvi did not have the latest software. To my surprise, the tech volunteered to send me the new 2008 without charge. Now that is service.

I just received my Nuvi yesterday (it's GREAT). The links in this thread talk about the upgrade to "City Navigator North America NT 2008". My Nuvi says something like "maps V.8". The advertisement said it was to be loaded with the latest maps. Do you experts think the V.8 means 2008?

Well, as it turns out the V8 is still not the latest. I just got off the phone with Garmin and was told the updated 2008 map disk will be automatically sent at the end of August to those registered units recently purchased.
