Auto Level Question

I notice when I unhooked my truck from our 5'er and do the auto-level thing it is leveling the Rv with the wheels off the ground for some reason?? It doesn't seem like my driveway is that slanted?? The guy we bought the rig from last week told us that the power legs should not be used to hold the RV off the ground without the tires touching the ground--he said it was too much weight for the auto legs to hold?? Anyone know why it wants to level it with the wheels off the ground??

Not real sure why it would be doing that on a level driveway unless you start the leveling process with the front too high in the air. On your other question we've been in some very strange campsites when we worked for Fish and Wildlife and it wasn't unusual for us to spend most of the winter with one side or the other completely off the ground. 7 years of full timing with that rig and never an issue. I've also used level-up to change tires (not recommended by Lippert, but I'm not the only one on here doing it).

Have never had to level the rig with tires off the ground.

We have been the woods in camp site with some of the wheels off the ground wont hurt anything at all!

We have leveled up with wheels off the ground. Is your rig not level after your complete the level up or is the fact the wheels are off the ground your primary concern?

I’d manually level the fifth wheel...do front to back first then side to side..use either old fashioned level placed inside or a cell phone level app..

Then I’d recalibrate the auto level

Six seasons of use with six point level up..boon docking, etc..I’ve never had wheels lift off ground to level nor would I want them

Yes the system will lift tires off the ground.. however now your got a much smaller contact point to hold all that weight with tires off the ground

It would be beneficial if you would add a signature block to include as a minimum the year and model of your Montana. In this case that information would let potential helpers know if your particular unit has ELECTRIC or HYDRAULIC levelers.

Also is are the wheels off teh ground on one side or all 4 wheels?
Can you manually lower it until the wheels are on the ground and level it with the wheels touching?

The more information you provide the better the answer.

The levelers can handle way more weight than what the unit weighs. I also have been in some extremely un-level and poorly graded sites that had one or more off the ground.

Hi--I was worried about the rig leveling itself with the wheels off the ground....the owner I bought it from told me that the wheels should not be off the ground when it self-levels but it seems that that's not really a problem. The people didn't have the rig for very long so I think they were a little confused!! The owner also thought the fridge ran on propane also but that turned out not to be true. Also I guess it's a good idea to read the instructions before trying to level it!!!

I have been at some sites where all 6 tires are still in contact with the ground and others, like my driveway, where tires were off the ground. Those struts will hold. If they didn't then they wouldn't work. Heck, the front struts don't have tires to help support them and they do fine.
I too, like DQ, have changed my tires using the levelling system. Works like a charm.

The jacks have plenty of force in a six point system to hold the trailer. I park in front of the house and auto level. The ODS wheels were off the ground and the DS wheels were on the ground. No problem. However, the DS tires began wearing on the inside, badly, so I had it aligned and problem solved. It does make me wonder if that much weight on the DS caused the axle to bend over time. I now use legos on the ODS at home for leveling.

Not so much a question of will the six point hydraulic level up have the capacity to lift the rig off the ground. Of course it does.. and ai too use mine to remove tires and due routine grease and brake maintenance..

However..if the tires are all on the ground...AND the amount of hydraulic cylinder extension from the leveling and Frt LG legs is minimized by using blocks under the pads then the overall result will be a much more stable rig when leveled..

An I would be concerned with the near full or full extension of the leveling center and rear gear getting tweaked over time...

The Frt LG are rated at 14K between the two so those are strong and of course diameter of those pistons is much larger..

I had to extend all my jacks to do fix the stickton issue.. pretty trippy for it to be that high but it for sure can be done... actually I will need to take out another qt and add a qt since mine is still popping.

I have found that if I leave the front jacks at the point that I unhitched, I too get the wheels off the ground leveling on occasion. I now lower the front as much as I can before auto leveling and that has taken care of the 'tires off the ground' problem except when we are in an extremely unlevel camping spot.

Fronts are 14k each, rears are 8k per leveler. I also put 2x12 wood under pads to shorten the stroke and have a more stable platform.

Last summer I visited the Lippert Service center in Goshen to have 4-point hydraulic leveling installed on my Monty. I wanted 6-point but that was not possible due to the layout of my Monty. When the job was done the service manager gave me an orientation on the system. During the orientation I mentioned that I had seen people use the hydraulic jacks to raise wheels to change tires or to make room for leveling blocks. His response - Lippert does not recommend using the hydraulic jacks to raise wheels off the ground. Every so often when i set up and use the auto-level feature, one or both wheels on the low side of the site will come off the ground. I always check for this and when it happens, I just revert to manual leveling using the keypad. I just lower the Monty enough to get a good amount of weight back on the wheels. Works well and is pretty fast vs. rolling on and off leveling blocks.
