Fully Body Paint - Worth It or Not?

As I previously said, my wife and I will be ordering a 3121RL and are trying to decide if we want to go with full body paint. All opinions are greatly welcomed.

This is my second post to MOC. Thanks for all the responses to my first regarding double pane windows.

Thanks

First of all, I do like the looks of full body paint.

When picking up our camper after service I mentioned I like the looks of one leaving the lot. He said yes they are great until the first time a branch reaches out and scratches it. He said folks get real upset at the cost of fixing the paint. He said they yell a lot.

So now I like to looks of them on other folks campers

We don't have any experience with full body paint, but I've always wondered about cooling one of those units down.

A lot of the custom paint units that I see are the darker colors, and the black scheme does look nice.

I would think that a black, or even darker, RV would be much harder to keep cool in the summer, especially when it's a 100 outside. Even two A/C units may have a hard time keeping up. You could add a third, and that might be necessary. We actually spend a fair amount of time camping at a state lake campground, and not all of the sites there are 50A. Maybe only 10-20% are 50A. It would be a HOT trip/weekend, if you were on 30A for sure, and could only run one A/C...

Had full body paint on last unit, wish we could have afforded it on this one. Way easier to maintain ! Alot of money though....

I do not know how long Keystone has been putting FBP on the Montanas. If it is a high quality job, it's worth it and will last for years, look at the older quality motor homes that look new. On the other hand, if it's a cheap job, it will not hold up and look bad in a few years.

We have full body paint on our 2013 3402 Big Sky. It is pretty and we get many compliments along the way. We did not purchase it for the full paint it was part of the package we wanted and the price was right.

The darker color's will have a effect on the inside temps. The paint scratches easily we had a paint shop say when doing some repairs he had never see a paint job so thin.

IMO the paint on our Montana was of low quality and unless the quality has improved it is not worth the cost. We are long timers and do plenty of road miles.

Sort of also depends on where you camp. We've had neighbors with full body paint and it seems their AC's come on about an hour before ours does and doesn't shut off near as often. Since we spend a lot of time in very hot weather it's not for us.

Just got my 3120 with full body paint. I love it. Will definitely have to be careful of the branches. The unit came with a bottle of all 4 paint colors for minor touch ups. BUT... it was definitely expensive. And I will be p'd if I mess it up.

Like the looks of FBP on our 2013 3900FB Big Sky but it is hard to keep it cool when the temps soar. Scratches seem to appear out of nowhere.

I have the full body paint. It isn't the same quality as automobile paint. It chips rather easily. I figured out fairly quickly that mud flaps (I have Rock Tamers set very low) stops the chipping of the garage door. Of course I had it painted a couple of times before I figured it out. I also kept the leftover paint when it was touched up (garage door and main door were replaced which necessitated painting them, and a friend hit the back of the rig causing some gouges) to use to cover the chips.

I do like there are no decals to speak of and it doesn't oxidize like fiberglass. A coat of wax every 6 months makes it shine. After 8 years it still looks new. It was one of the very first painted Montanas and I still get complements on it.

Would I do it again? I don't know. In 2011, the Big Sky package came out with paint, G614s, covered awning, curved shower and a couple of other doodads. It was priced as an option at $10,000 MSRP (it was only $6K at first - but my rig was a then new model and came out later and the cost went up). Still after a 34% discount of off MSRP, the real cost was worthwhile to me. I understand the new vehicles cost $10K for just the paint. Some complain that paint causes higher inside temperatures. I have found that I have little trouble that way but my RV is mostly white above the mid-line. Some of the other color combinations can be a lot warmer.

Given the decal issues and oxidation of fiberglass, I lean towards paint if I buy a different rig.

I love the FBP on our rig, plus the tinted window on the cap, much easier to clean, after a bath she looks brand new again. We have 2 AC's and they seem to keep up ok, but we tend to avoid 100 degree temp locations.

this question is not limited to 5er's we just switched from Class A with painted body's FBP is the most popular with Class A. We now have a 3791RD with FPB. Already added a DIY Ceramic coating (good for 2-3 years) and looks beautiful. With that said ours is a 2019 that we bought used (previous owner only had it for 6 months) it had FPB and Legacy (which is required to get FBP) Paid only $58K. With that said would I pay $9k more for FBP no way, while it adds to resale values it also increases depreciation. My purchase was a great example 6 months old (like new) with warranty left no signs of use, MSRP was $110K sold new 6 months prior for $87K, I buy 6 months after new pay $58K. While we were planning to buy new we are so glad we did not as the 1st year or two depreciation is crazy.

Not all FBP is dark we have the Cashmere paint which is light i colors over all. OUr Class A was Black and Golds however we still did not experiece isses with excessive heat related to body color as fiberglass/composites
are not a big conductor of heat

Would I like FBP - absolutely! But that added 10+% to the cost of a 5th wheel is pretty hard to digest. The nose cap on our HC was painted after the dreadded fadeand always looks good even when the rest of RV looks like it was ridden had then put out to pastuer dirty

I like the look of FBP (never had one ), but would not want there to be any dark colors. Some of the rigs with black/ dark brown/ red have to be hotter with the sun beating on them.

There are a couple options for a true Nano coating I use this one you will need 3 of them maybe 4

https://www.amazon.com/Nano-Bond-Cer...e%2C212&sr=1-6

Here is another option, not as long lasting but more affordable and maintainable

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B7D9NW4...v_ov_lig_dp_it

Our Class A had a Paint Protection film on the front and it really saved the paint. I bought a New Wrangler Sept of 2018 paint color black, I had the entire jeep Wrapped in 3M to day after more than 1500 miles of off road paint still looks like new. If you are concerned about protecting that $10K Paint using a PPF on the front cap will keep it looking like new for 10 years (which is 3M's warranty)

Note before you apply any Ceramic you need to clay bar the entire paint surface to get all the oxidation and old wax off if there are any.

The for cleaning I use a dry wash just spay on and wipe off this will also add a quick wax coat on top of the ceramic.

I have FBP on a class C. It’s a 07 model and still looks like new but it’s always been kept inside. If it were outside I don’t know what it would look like.
