Theft of Propane Tanks!

We got hit by propane thrives last night. Took tanks and what has I left in them. Reviewing video from truck. Looks like a couple good shots. I know the truck. Our Police have bigger fish but I posted on Craigslist! Could been worse! Was parked in front of house. Well lit but hey when your on meth... Just FYI. Least they left $600. In new batteries alone!

That's why I have locks on ours. Might not stop them if they are determined but it might slow them down long enough for me to hear them....

I have read posts about people worrying about propane tank theft. But this is the first I have read of an actual theft.

We have a joke here in Oregon.

Q: Why do people that live in Bend go to garage sales in La Pine?

A: So they can get their stuff back!

Tweakers are everywhere now.

If you have quality surveillance footage with irrefutable proof of who took the tanks, and the police will not lift a finger to bust the punks, I would be down there giving the Chief of Police a very loud earful until I got some results.

I lock mine as well. You feel violated when some low life pond scum steals what you have honestly worked for.

Not a problem. Everyone else in the campground has keys to your basement

We started trailering in 1978, and even back then we were told to lock our tanks to keep them from walking away. My boss at work went camping with a group of friends back around 2003, and one of group had one of their tanks stolen - as near as they could tell at a rest stop.

Growing up in the area I did, just north of Detroit, made me over cautious, though some might say paranoid. That's OK, I'd rather take the extra time to secure things and be sure than not do it and be sorry. When my parents retired and moved out to the country, the CB craze was going strong. One of their friends had visitors from down state and were told they didn't need to lock their car up there in God's country. The next morning they found their CB gone. Some angel must have needed it.

Tom do you lock the tank inside the compartment or have you changed the door tabs to lockable ones?

And Artemus like several others your case is the first I've heard of the tanks actually being taken. Sorry you seem to be attracting some unusual problems. Dennis

I lock the straps with a small padlock that secure the tanks. It will slow down a tweeker.

It is against Federal law to have LP tanks in a locked compartment on a motor vehicle/RV.

They must be available to anyone to turn them off in case of a fire.

Jim

I put an eye bolt to the frame in the compartment and use a cable lock on each tank. Slows them down but if they want it they'll get it.

I think living in Ca is part of it Dennis! Lol. Also I tend to share too much! Tanks been problem here for awhile. I thought the tanks were secure, plus our neighborhood is very safe. Rethinking everything right now.

What Jim (jlb27537) said. It's against the law to lock the compartment but not the straps holding the tanks, which are designed to accept a small lock.

Same here, master lock through the lock hole on the straps. If they know they're locked they'll come with the tools. If they're surprised they'll most likely get someone elses.

Plus you can buy a set of locks that are keyed the same, so you only need one key to unlock either tank. That's what we have plus a third lock for the hitch release lever when hooked up, again uses the same key.
