Prepaid Phones in Canada

I am curious if anyone knows if you are better off buying a prepaid cell phone in Canada or adding Canada to our verizon plan. It appears that the Verizon plan gives good voice but poor text and data options. We are going to Alaska and will spend a bit of time in Canada going and returning.

We have Net10 and it did not work in Canada. I contacted Net10 and they do not offer service there. Once we got to AK it worked fine. Several of the folks traveling with us had Verizon and their plans allowed them to add Canada for minimal charge (~$30/month).

We add onto our Verizon, I think we pay about $20.00 a month extra. We use it all over Canada with great reception. By adding onto you existing plan it also saves on incoming calls.

While our trip to Alaska was in 2007, there was little cell service outside of any major city (not many of these either). It maybe different now. Yes, in Alaska the service is better but in BC and the Yukon--check carefully for available service. That is why we carried a jack and a good spare tire in case we had a problem in a remote section of the Alaska Highway--did not happen but we were prepared. No cell service means you cannot contact your roadside service--Have a great trip and enjoy every mile of a great drive.

About three years ago I checked on this. At that time Verizon said that you could activate and terminate the Canadian coverage at will. They would prorate the bill so that you would only pay for the time you were activated.
