After 40+ years...

No I didn't retire, not yet! But after working a little over 40 years at the plant a day shift job was created in my dept that allows me to enjoy the same job that I've worked for years. For most of the years I’ve worked a rotating shift with only one weekend off a month. Our plant went to a rotating 12 hour shift several years back which gave shift workers more days off per month but still it’s a tiresome rotation. The continuous changing of the shifts was beginning to get more tiresome to me than in the past. In March I began a four-day work-week with Fri, Sat & Sundays off. I really enjoy it now and hope that it will last as long as I do there! Now every weekend is game for camping!

Good for you, Bill. I can relate to the 12-hour shifts. I worked them in my industry for many years. I was usually on the PM-AM side of things. 3-4 days off a week was nice, but as I got older, the 12-hour shifts got more difficult. As an offset pressman, I spent practically the whole shift on my feet. By the end of the night, it felt like I was walking on 2 bags of sand. I'm no longer printing after about 35 years in the trade, and doing something different that's much easier on the old bones. I hope this new schedule works out well for you. I'm sure you've earned it. Enjoy the extra time camping, and that awesome new truck.

Thanks, I appreciate that. It does take another shift worker to really appreciate the difference.

My father ran a print shop in Portsmouth, Ohio for many years. I can also appreciate what you said about being on your feet all day. I didn’t spend a lot of time there but worked a little several years back. Became familiar with the process over the years.

I second the congratulations. I never worked those, but did work in an industry where some of our customers I worked with did work those rotating 12 hour shifts. Always thought that had to be very difficult keeping your body clock in sync. Although a lot of them really did love those days off.

Way to go, forty years at one place is a long time. I am glad they got a shift that works better for you. I have been on the 4-10 shift for a lot of years. It sure makes the weekends nicer althought you still have long days it is worth it.

Most of the people work 4-10’s but my schedule is a 12, 8, 8, 12. I think I’m the only one working that and it’s due to the rotation coverage. It works out better for the company that way, which I don’t mind. Really enjoy the 2 8-hour days when they roll around. I mentioned that the only thing better would be 4 8-hour days. LOL

Worked in the FAA we were on line 24/7/365 and worked rotating shifts nearly my entire work life. Finally got a day job the last 5 years the rotating shifts were just to much anymore.

When I was working, running the machines my normal work week was 4 eleven hour days 1 eight and 2 four hour days. I always took off for Christmas and some years that would be the only day I took off except for Thanksgiving day which I took off at noon.
Oh the joys of having your own business.
