I finally did it and I'm not very proud of it!
I dropped the Monty on the truck bed today! I read somewhere where there are two types of campers, those who have dropped their 5th wheel and those who will drop their 5th wheel. I guess it moved me into the other category of which I never thought I would belong.
The fortunate thing is that I was preparing to add the spring clips for the jacks and I had left the drivers jack within about 2 inches of the ground. Once it settled in the gravel it was setting on the truck bed on both sides; however, I received very little damage on either the Monty or the truck. You can see where the trim on the under side of the Monty is scuffed and that is all the damage it done. On the truck it may have placed a very slight dent on one rail and put a small indention on the truck cover edging. That is all that was done so I consider it very fortunate that it wasn't any worse than that. As far as making any repairs it isn't enough to even worry about. It isn't noticeable unless I would point it out to you.

I am glad it was minimal, like you stated it is easy to do, we can't be 'on our game' all the time.
I am also glad you are taking it well, heck, it could always be worse.

You were very fortunate that there was not more damage. This may be a good time to consider the benefits of a bedsaver.

Donna -
Sorry to hear you dropped the Montana on the truck. Was Bill upset? Thought a little humor might help at this time. I'm glad there wasn't more damage, but more than that, I'm glad no one got hurt.

Since I'm off tomorrow, I'm going to start looking for a bed saver. I'll check and see if a couple dealers close to me happen to have one and if so I'll go and get it!

Bill,
Sorry to hear. What was the error in procedure out of curiousity?
I don't think you need the bedsaver now - you're probably more aware then the rest of us ever will be now and will never drop it again

That may be true but if there should be a next time I probably wouldn't be as lucky. I have never left the jack that close to the ground before.
The error simply put was due to just getting in a hurry. I didn't take the time to lock in the pin clip on the handle. I Thought it was locked in place on the wheel and opps.

Welcome to the club!!! Believe me the bed saver will give you lost and lots of good night sleep!!! Glad you damage was minimal, know for a fact that the damage to the truck alone can be $6041.00 - kinda worth the $168.00 for the bed saver!!!!

Here are a few pictures if I can get this figured out!
This is on the curb side, not much of anything that won't wsah off.
This is the worst damage, slightly indented but mostly just marred on the trim.

Bill-n-Donna,
Some of the RV Angels were watching over you, so the out come was not as bad as it could have been.
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Hmmm! Now, do I buy the tire pressure monitors, or the bed saver. (Guess I better get the both!)

Well, I got a bed saver on order. I asked them about who was buying the bed savers and they indicated they only sold them to people who had dropped the 5th onto their truck. Imagine that!

Hmm, now I'm wondering if one advantage of my Star Performance (or any) Gooseneck converter is the requirement to significantly raise and lower the 5th Wheel jacks to clear (rise above) the ball to either hook or unhook.
I'm not sure how I could drop it. And assuming the converter landed anywhere on the bed, the Fiver probably would clear the side rails as normally my hitched up clearance is 5-6 inches and the ball is not quite that high? The converter bottom rides about an inch or less off the bed when hitched.
I can still run/back the closed tailgate into the hitch or the open tailgate into the RV though!
