Oregon Coast!

After 8,700 miles and many states, family visits, NPs, etc., we made it to Astoria, OR. Will work our way down the coast before turning back east. Not sure when?!! 60F here and comfy, unlike back home. Loving it! Life is good. Living the dream?!!!

We love the Oregon Coast! We were supposed to be volunteering for USFWS this summer in Bandon, but Bob's surgeries caused us to withdraw from the assignment. Have fun!!

Chris,
Like Bob and Pam we love the OR Coast! We try to visit there as often as we can. If you're not careful you'll run over another MOC member so drive carefully! In fact we plan to head up that direction in a couple of weeks. Enjoy your trip. Travel safely, Dennis and Mary Kay

Chris, if you get a chance, check out Ft. Stevens. Has had a fort since the Civil War. Neat place to stay. There should be some war re-enactments coming up soon. Also, Ft. Clatsop for Lewis and Clark history. Across in Washington is Cape Disappointment which is another fort area.

Have fun!

Cap'n Chris,
We're a headin your way! In Mitchel SD today, then Sturgis tomorrow, then cross Montana for two days, then on to our old stompin grounds in Colvile WA for a couple days. Then across WA to our daughter's near Vancouver, WA by the end of July.
Maybe we can meetup between here and there?
Take care,
Chuck

Beautiful drive. Been a few years, but it is on our list of places to return to.
If you are headed down 101 thru northern California, be sure to detour off the main road and take the Avenue of the Giants side trip. Parallels 101.Those are some BIG trees. You know it is big when it would take a pretty good size ladder to climb over one that has fallen and is laying on the ground. Or to walk around inside one that has fire damage at the base but is still much alive.

We traveled Hwy 101 from around Sacremento CA to Portland OR. We know what you mean. That is a beautiful area. You and Lynn continue to have a wonderful time.

Hey! We just left Astoria yesterday! We were at Ft Stephen's fpr 4 nights. Previously we stopped at Nehalem Bay SP, South Beach SP, Bullards Beach SP, Joseph Stewart SP (near Crater Lake; don't miss Crater!!) and Harris Beach SP. Three weeks on the Oregon coast, and loved every cold damp minute of it. We got our wish to escape the Florida summer! Currently at a KOA in Castle Rock, WA, neat Mt St Helens, and headed ever north from here. Just under 8000 miles so far.

On your way south be sure to stop in Newport. The Rogue Brewery and distillery make some good stuff. There is a palce just south of the town called South Beach FIsh Market. Best halibut fish and chips we ever ate! Tillamook Creamery in Tillamook was a great stop for cheese and ice cream. Lots of lighthouses and beautiful coastal views are ahead of you. Enjoy!!

As you drive, be sure to stop at any and all places - always something beautiful to see on the Oregon coast! A few of our favorites:
*Cannon Beach
*Manzanita
*Newport
*Cape Blanco

Enjoy!!

Chris,

While still in Oregon, try taking a sandrail ride in Florence. It's something you'll always remember!

Also, when traveling down I-5 in California, be careful. The interstate is in dear need of repair!

Life is sooo good. Misty rain to sunny skies. Ran into a Forest Service colleague coming out of Mo's Chowder House at Cannon Beach! Awesome. Arrived at Port of Newport Marina and RV park today. Visited w/some successful fishermen (halibut and dungeness crab). One guy gave me 2 crabs for supper!!! Sweet. More exploring for the next few days, here.

Since you are now in Newport, be sure and visit the Oregon State Marine research center, and also the Oregon Coast Aquarium. Both really neat places, and both down on the bay.

As you head south, you could overnight at the Mill Casino in North Bend (Coos Bay) and have dinner there as well as make a few bucks!!! They have a nice RV park there.

Also, heading south, be sure and stop at the town of Bandon. The downtown part is historic, with neat shops, and great food. Also, the location of one of the premier golf courses in the world.

Then, if you stay in Gold Beach, by all means take the jet boat trip up the Rogue River. All day trip, with lunch. Worth every moment.

Welcome to Oregon. And, it's pronounced "Ore E Gun", not "Ore Gone" like some do from back east.

Chris, I sent you a message on FB, but don't know if you got it and now I can't find it. Anyway, while you're in Newport, the fun things to see and do are:
1. Hatfield Marine Science Center, which is within walking distance of you. They handfeed the octopus, Ursula who happens to be beautiful, on certain days. Try to go on one of those days.
2. Both lighthouses - Yaquina Bay, which is an historic lighthouse, and Yaquina Head at Yaquina Head Outsanding Natural Area, which is a functioning lighthouse. The decks surrounding the Yaquina Head Lighthouse are where we worked as wildlife interpreters last summer.
3. Nye Beach area - fun to walk around. The food at Georgie's is very good.
4. Historic Bayfront - fun to walk around. There is a wonderful breakfast place there on a corner. It's blue and white, but I can't remember the name.
5. If you want to do a little kayaking, get in touch with the USFWS there at the Hatfield complex and see when they are doing trips in the Siletz Bay NWR. It is a beautiful paddle. Or you can rent kayaks at Beaver Creek Natural Area which is just south of Newport. Beautiful there, too.

Sure wish we were there to take you around. Hugs to you both.

East of Florence is Eugene and Coburg,OR. There is a county park their called Armitage County Park. It's about 1/2 mile from all the major services, like Cumins, Freightliner, Cat, etc., and another 1/2 mile to the million dollar Marathon Coach. Not that I'm saying you should trade, but they are nice to look at.

Just returned from a trip to Newport - stayed at Port of Newport RV and Marina - first time there and we enjoyed it very much. Lunch at Georgie's, our favorite restaurant there - very good! Enjoy your visit.

I would give a thumbs up to all the places along the Oregon Coast!! We keep saying that we need to start at Astoria and just meander our way down to the California border just stopping every few days to check out things in that area.

Loving the coast! Whales, seals, sea birds, etc. Newport is fun. Thanks for all of the suggestions. Staying a few extra days to enjoy! Did Mo's chowder again today! Original place in Bay Front.

We just left Newport on the 22nd. Spent 8 days at South Beach State Park. If you are interested in seeing that 66ft long concrete dock that washed up from Japan, it is on the north end of Newport at Agate Beach. Interesting site. I hear they are still trying to figure out who is going to dismantle it. Enjoy your stay!
