Another Ford Recall

Several of us have already had failures with the CPS on the 7.3's. Now Ford is recalling 1.17 million truck manufactured between 1997 and 2003.

Imagine that......! I guess those of us that have already replaced them are out of luck? Maybe the ones that were replaced by Ford are also bad?

This is really old news to those of us who drove/drive Fords of that vintage. When the price of the electrical unit dropped to $15.00, many bought one to carry in the glove box. I know I did. One bolt and a plug and play connection. Of course, it would make you real mad if it left you on the side of the road.

Ford should have dealt with this 5 years ago. Then all the non-Ford drivers wouldn't be having so much fun now. Personally, I don't enjoy it when any of the big three have difficulty. It takes jobs away from Americans when market share is lost to foreign makers.

Sold my 7.3 after having installed a new cps. As I recall there were two types of cps the old one that costs $200 and always needed replacing and a new one at $25. One was black and one was grey. I forgot which was the old and which was the new color.

Charlie,

Thanks for the info! I've changed the CPS once so far. I guess I'll wait until I get my notice.

Some wag on another forum paraphrased the Ford motto "90% of all Ford trucks made since 19XX are still on the road: The other 10% made it home!!"

Dear Bob: Although I know all is in good fun, I tried bitting my lip but it just didn't work. Referring to the 1999 to 2004 time frame, the 10% of the time it would start, at least my Powerstroke didn't wake up every dog and sleeping baby in a 4 county area like the Cummings did.

Turboguy: I am well aware of the noise issue. I had an '01 CTD Dodge that I put a 4" turbo back exhaust and straight thru muffler on it along with an Edge chip. I tried never to start the thing before 8 in the A.M. And generally had it shut off before 7 in the evening.

It is a sad thing when any of the big 3 ignore what is an obvious flaw in their product. CPS problems with Ford and lift pump problems with the second generation Dodge are just two examples. Perhaps when Toyota and Nissan start making 3/4 and one ton trucks they will pay a little more attention to problems.

Correct me if I am wrong, but it appears that they are not recalling F250 & F350, just the E series van, Excursion, F450 & F550. How could they exclude the 250's & 350's from this when they all have the same engine?

Mark & Sharon,
From what I have read and heard seems like it pretty much affects all 7.3Ls manufactured between 1997-2003. Here is a link to one article I read. I have already received an electronic recall notice from Ford and I have an 02 F-250.
http://www.thedieselgarage.com/forum...d.php?p=520836
Once you get to this page, just scroll to the first post to read the notice.

Jack

I just went to ford.com and went to the recall section. I put in my VIN and sure enough mine has been recalled.

With ours being a 1995 it says no recalls on it. I wonder why? Gotta call somebody.

I wonder if Ford will own up and give the rest of us our money back. There are probably thousands of people who had CPS failures and had to pay the 100 deductible to have it replaced.

Am going to hunt down a Ford dealer today here in our part of Florida. I know there are a couple of TSB's on this Job #1 08 6.4 and we are told that the different air dam on the 08 improves MPG. They go from a 2 inch dam on the Job #1 to a 4 Inch air dam on the Job #2 trucks...Does that make any sense???? I interrogate every 08 6.4 driver that I come across and every one of them like the truck in general but have a BIG problem with the MPG. I am less and less impressed with the performance of this truck..I hope there is something wrong with it...

I doubt anybody will get their money back. I bought a spare for 100 dollars and it still sits in the glove box.

I think 95's had a different cps so maybe that is why they have not been recalled.

I was getting 19 MPG Sunday, not pulling, here in the mountains and I never got that in my 02 7.3. BUT, in town, 10.6 - 11.5, got about 12.5 on the 7.3. Only 2000 miles on mine now, but I love this truck so much more than the 02. Way better.

Made trip to the local Ford dealer today and had the CPS replaced. Even though I had a replacement 35000 miles ago it was the old design. I was told this one should not fail.

Don't forget the clunking steering shaft on the GM's. It is indeed allof the big 3 and also the foreign jobs. Tundra just had a big recall of some kind.
