F250 diesel fuel tank

Boy, crawling under the truck is something that can be surprising.

I crawled under the check bolts on the hitch rails to the frame, and discovered this long black thing that is on driver's side and runs front to rear, beginning behind the cab. I take it to be the fuel tank. It was "wet" and oily. Did not smell of diesel fuel but was of that consistency. On top of the tank, when it went under a frame componet, was sticking out half a round gasket, several inches around (dia. 6 inches approx.)

Anybody got a clue what this is and what needs doing?

Thanks and Merry Christmas. This forum is the first place I turn when I have a problem. Thanks again.

Hi genecurp, hard to say...can you take a picture and post? Many possibilities, could be abrasion protection that is miss-placed. If it is...then tank could have been rubbing to point of creating a leak but all this is speculation on limited clues you have shared.

Mine also has the same thing and I figured that it might be something like a handle they use during assembly. I will try to find out and post it.

Gene,

There is a 6-in opening in the top of the tank that houses the fuel feed line and the electric fuel pump (fuel pump submerged in tank). It's like a metal ring with a metal insert. I believe that is all gasketed to the (plastic?) fuel tank and it must have been loose and the gasket slipped out maybe.

You might try some of the Ford and or diesel Forums. They might have specific information about your situation. Or even try Google and see what shows up.

Final Report
Took the truck to a ford dealer who said the gasket sticking out is used during assembly to reduce friction when installing the fuel tank.

I did have a fuel leak, where the fuel pump is in the tank, as suggested by one of my respondents above.

Fixed under warrenty. I am pleased
