A/C Cycles Really Fast

Our a/c seems to cool just fine - it's running in the mid 90s here and we only need the front unit running to cool the inside down to comfortable level. The one thing that really bothers me is that I notice the unit completely shuts down - fan, compressor, & all and then in 30 seconds or less all cut back on when outside ambient is low (75-85). Now if I remember from my past life - a/c and refrigerator repair guy - this is not good for the compressor - even with a hard start kit (relay & start cap). The unit might run 2-3 minutes, then repeat. Somewhere on these forums, I saw someone mention to seal the area behind the wall thermostats - warm air floods up when fan is off and the thermostat responds. I do not see how to remove the wall stat.

Master,

Try setting your fan to either low or high vs auto.

Taking it off auto is good advice. When the fans are in the auto position, the unit will run on high fan until it gets within 5 degrees of the set point, then it will shift to low fan. If the temp then moves more than 5 degrees from set point, it will go back to high. Whenever it shifts fan speeds, it shuts down for a few seconds then starts again; might be what you are experiencing.

Really makes no difference as the compressor still cycles plus you have to listen to the fan run all the time. I prefer to use AUTO on the fan and have for years.

We always run ours on auto but run both a/c's at the same temp at the same time. 2018 3790RD

To each their own. I run our fan on High because we don't like the change from quiet to AC, easier for us to just get used to the sound of the high fan, especially at night when trying to sleep.

Mine is doing something similar with the fan cycling off/on, but the compressor continues to run until the thermostat is satisfied. Are you sure your compressor is cutting off and back on in 30 seconds? I would be surprised if the system pressures would equalize enough in 30 seconds to let the compressor start back up. You mentioned a hard-start kit, maybe that will let it start back up. Without one, I don't think it would.
