Melted Molding

This is a first for me. I had a hot day of traveling in AZ yesterday. The temp was in the high 90s part of the day. When I got to my night camp I noticed the bottom vinyl molding on the front of the rig had melted. There are not any scratches or rubber marks from road junk hitting it. It is deformed and simply melted out of shape.

The only thing I can figure out is the heat from the truck exhaust going through a regen cycle heated up the trim piece and deformed it. This has not happen in the previous 22,000 miles I have towed this rig with the same truck. The truck may have run a little hotter than all the other times and there were some hills involved.

Has anyone else encountered this?

Joe

Haven't heard of that one before. But I think you are right about the exhaust. Must have been just the right conditions that the exhaust was concentrated right on that area for an extended time.

How about installing a turn down tip on your exhaust? That might help on that problem

My truck is an 08 with one of those tapered ends we call an after burner. I am not sure if one can add a turned down end piece to it. They are designed as a part of the emissions system.

Did you make a sharp turn and sit still a few minutes? This would put your exhaust closer to the trim.

Joe,
Hasn't happened to mine (yet) but I also have a Dodge 2500 not a Chevy. The downturn tip does sound like a good suggestion.

No sharp turns or sitting still. I think it was a hot day with a lot of hills and perhaps ran hotter than normally.
I may end up installing a heat deflector of some sort. Got to call Keystone and see what the part number might be so I will know what to order.

Could this be a new problem with the new front caps and the aerodynamic caps? I have noticed the front storage is a lot closer to the TV than mine with or without the slider!
